The Velvet Underground – The Velvet\nUnderground & Nico‘The Album That Changed Music’ –\nThe ObserverThe musical landscape would certainly look\ndifferent without The Velvet Underground. Many performers\nmake no secret of the fact that they were strongly\ninfluenced by VU\, just think David Bowie\, Joy Division\,\nSonic Youth\, Pixies\, Beck\, REM\, The Strokes\,….When\ntheir\, now classic\, debut The Velvet Underground &\nNico was released in 1967 (in full flower power period)\nhowever\, nobody had any idea that this band would so\nstrongly influence coming generations. Various record labels\nrefused to release it\, kept under wraps by music\njournalists\, banned from the radio\, and record stores\nrefused to stock the album due to the far too controversial\ncontent. VU's career couldn't have gotten off to a\nworse start.There are various reasons why the album is one\nof the most influential ever and has become a true rock\nmusic icon:-the notorious banana cover by Andy Warhol-the\nmusical boundaries that were explored. -the continual\nseeking of experiment and the search for a unique sound\n(that violin of John Cale's!)-the subjects broached:\nsadomasochism\, drug use\, prostitution.-and because it\ncontains classics like I’m Waiting For My Man\, Femme\nFatale\, Venus In Furs\, All Tomorrow’s Parties and\nHeroin. The public wasn't ready for this in 1967\,\nmeanwhile history has proven to the contrary.On 16 June you\ncan immerse yourself in the unique world of Lou Reed\, John\nCale\, Sterling Morrison\, Mo Tucker and Nico for 48 minutes\nand 51 seconds.The album will be introduced in Dutch by Kurt\nOverbergh\, Ancienne Belgique's Artistic Director.
