SUMMARY:The Skatalites + The Aggrolites
LOCATION:AB Grote zaal (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:This Now_Series takes off to the Caribbean\, the home of ska\nand reggae. A fantastic trip from Brussels to The Kempen and\nthen via Los Angeles to Jamaica. They've been active\,\nwith a varying line-up\, since 1964 and yet The Skatalites\nremain - according to Billboard - 'Jamaica's supreme\ninstrumental band'. The solid rock that survived many a\nska-revival: there was the rise of the likes of Madness and\nThe Specials\, then the skacore of The Mighty Mighty\nBosstones and even No Doubt flirted thoroughly with ska.\nWithout The Skatalites there would be no ska. Without ska\nthere would be no reggae. Officially established in 1964\,\nThe Skatalites used ska to create the soundtrack for an\nindependent Jamaica. Barely 1 year later they ceased to\nexist\, only to return to the road in 1983 with increasing\nsuccess & following and new albums to record. As studio\nmusicians they often recorded for Studio One\, a label with\nan impact comparable with say Motown (for soul)\, Stax (for\nfunk) and Blue Note (for jazz). The Aggrolites\, the masters\nof dirty reggae! Last year in November they earned the title\n'best party in the ABClub' with a 2 hour\n(!)aftershow following Gogol Bordello. For those who love a\nraw soul and funk impregnated mixture of ska and reggae\,\nthat takes-off with the punk mentality unique to their\n(HellCat/Epitaph) label. Growing up with the best of James\nBrown\, The Meters and Wilson Pickett\, this fivesome met in\nLos Angeles around 2002. The band can thank its popularity\nespecially to the many tours in which they played together\nwith their Jamaican heroes Prince Buster and The\nSkatalites\, ska veterans Madness and Hepcat or the punk\noutfit Dropkick Murphys. The Moon Invaders are 8 young guys\nfrom Brussels with a common passion for the Jamaican music\nof the 60's & '70's: ska\, rocksteady and a\nprimal form of reggae that they cross-fertilized with dub\,\nsoul and rhythm & blues. Their vintage sound too carries\nthat typical Studio One stamp\, something that bands like\nThe Slackers or our very own Internationals are also very\nstrong in. Just see\, they managed to get hold of Slackers\nfrontman Vic Ruggiero as producer for their latest album\n'Moovin' & Groovin'. Campina Reggae?\nTheir MySpace capitalizes 'strong and\nunderstandable' (vet en verstaanbaar) dutch language\nreggae. 'Vet en Verstaanbaar' is also the title of\nthe debut from this new outfit based around Steven Van Gool.\nIndeed\, that tall-as-the-treetops bassist who earned his\nstripes with Wawadadakwa and El Tattoo Del Tigre. So\nstirring\, deep basslines also form the basis of catchy\nparty-stompers like 'Ni Verzwakke (ge moet blijve\ngoan!)' and 'Ouagadougou'. Exoticism from The\nKempen to far over the borders. Vraiment chaud en bloody\nbrilliant! 6:30 doors7:00 Aggrolites (Main Hall) 8:15\nCampina Reggae (Club) 9:00 The Skatalites (Main Hall) 10:30\nThe Moon Invaders (Club)
