SUMMARY:The National
LOCATION:AB Grote zaal (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:Warning: Smoking Ban inspection during The National on\nSunday 21 October 2010 Since 1 January 2006 it has no\nlonger been permitted to smoke in public places\, so not in\nAB either. After consultation between AB and the Federal\nDepartment of Public Health\, Food-Chain Safety and the\nEnvironment\, there will be a number of inspections carried\nout in the AB over the coming months by the Public Health\ndepartment. American band The National again\nmade a great leap forward with ‘High Violet’. Following\non from the much praised ‘Alligator’ of 2005 and\n‘Boxer’ of 2007\, ‘High Violet’ is yet another\ncollection of dark pearls from the hand of singer Matt\nBerninger\, accompanied by the 2 Dessner brothers and the 2\nDevendorf brothers. ‘High Violet’ is the first album to\nbe recorded in an old 1920's garage in Brooklyn that\nthey converted into a studio. The technical limitations mean\nthat this is no hi-fi album\, rather\, it's one in which\nBerninger can playfully realise his desire to sound like eg:\nhot asphalt (sic). In the category ‘with a little help\nfrom my friends’: we recognize (just as with Boxer) Sufjan\nStevens but this time also Richard Reed Parry from Arcade\nFire.The National\, established in Ohio but now resideing in\nBrooklyn\, are difficult to categorize\, as evidenced by\ntheir involvment in the Red Hot Organisation project ‘Dark\nWas The Night’. This compilation to benifit Aids\norganisations was produced by brothers Aaron and Bryce\nDessner and contains recordings by Bon Iver\, Grizzly Bear\nand Yeasayer. Later the Dessners were also asked to write a\n70 minute song for the Howard Gilman Opera House. Kim and\nKelly Deal (Breeders\, Pixies) and Shara Worden (My\nBrightest Diamond) provided the vocals. The National is a\nband with many faces and an impressive discography. So\ndon't miss their return to the AB. Lovers of the\nbetter songs\, celebrate! Special Guest to the concert by\nThe National will be none less than Phosphorescent or rather\nBrooklynite Matthew Houck. No unknown to AB as\, after 2\neye-opening visits to the ABClub (2007 & 2008) and\nproviding the support act to (strangely enough) David Gray\nearly this year\, Houck & Co. may now come and present\nthe new album ‘Here’s To Taking It Easy’. He also\nsurprised friend and foe last year with his ode to Willie\nNelson\, simply entitled ‘To Willie’. Don't miss\nthis show as Phosphorescent is tipped as one of the big\nsongwriters of the new century. \n
