SUMMARY:The GZA presents Liquid Swords + Roots Manuva
LOCATION:AB Grote zaal (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:We mostly know American hip hop performer GZA (pronounced\n'djizza')\, also known as THE GENIUS\, as\nestablisher of the priceless Wu-Tang Clan. Aside from that\,\nhe also released five solo albums. Of those\, 'Liquid\nSwords' from 1995 is a milestone in the history of the\nWu-Tang Clan and hip hop in general. In September 2007 he\npresented this album in its entirety live in Brooklyn (with\nJamie Lidell as support-act!) and he'll be bringing that\nshow to Europe this Fall. If you know that GZA uses the word\nsword as a metaphor for the tongue\, then you know we can\nexpect some verbal fireworks. GZA\, real name Gary Grice\,\ndiscovered the hip hop scene in de Soundview Projects in his\nyouth in the Bronx. He ran into Robert Diggs and Russell\nJones there and they they started the hip hop crew All In\nTogether Now. After their ways parted for solo projects\,\nthey later reunited as Wu-Tang Clan and Diggs took on the\nalias RZA\, Jones was later renowned as Ol' Dirty\nBastard. In '93 the group successfully debuted with the\nalbum 'Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)' and the rest\nis history. 'Liquid Swords\, is arguably Wu-Tang's\nfinest hour'. Pitchfork Media 'Often acclaimed as\nthe best Wu-Tang solo project of all\, Liquid Swords\ncemented the Genius/GZA's reputation as the best pure\nlyricist in the group'. Allmusic.Com Without a doubt the\njuiciest hip-hop bill this Autumn\, as The GZA will have\nnone less than British pride Roots Manuva at his side.\nThat's right\, before The GZA lets his 'Liquid\nSwords' masterpiece loose on you\, Roots Manuva will\nclimb on stage with band to present his new album 'Slime\n& Reason'. Roots Manuva has clearly been rooting\naround in his reggae collection this time\, and not without\nresult in his classic 'Run Come Save Me'. 'Slime\n& Reason' is his sixth studio album if you count the\nremix albums 'Dub Come Save Me' from 2002 and\n'Alternately Deep' from 2006. The original albums\n'Run Come Save Me' and 'Awfully Deep' are\nquite simply milestones in British hip-hop history. Rodney\nSmith (Roots' real name) also rightly received an award\nfor Best British Hip-Hop Act. 'He is the voice of urban\nBritain\, encompassing dub\, ragga\, funk and hip hop as it\nsweeps from crumbling street corners to ganja-filled\ndancehalls\, setting gritty narratives against all manner of\nwarped beats' (The Times). He also gets praised\nlyrically for his typically British point of view\, like\n'eating cheese on toast and drinking two pints of\nbitter'. He had 2 semi-hits with 'Dreamy Days'\nand 'Colossal Insight' but his big breakthrough was\nwith 'Witness (1 Hope)'. myspace Extra support-act\nwill take the form of Beat Drunx\, the hip-hop formation\naround beats producer One Cell and MC Rubski. One Cell's\nproductions are built on deep funk\, rock and jazz and in\n2005 he went to work with Rubski under the name Beat Drunx.\nSince then\, both on their album 'Brewed &\nBottled' and on stage\, we've also recognized MC\nAcrid Cast and DJ Courtasock (you most likely know the\nlatter from Grazzhoppa's mildly phenomenal DJ Big Band).\n Timing 6:00 pm doors 6:30 pm Beat Drunx7:30 pm Roots\nManuva 9:15 pm The GZA presents 'Liquid Swords'
