SUMMARY:Squarepusher + Venetian Snares + Tim Exile + Voodoo Trance S
ound System
LOCATION:AB Grote zaal (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm SOUNDTRACK BY… BL13Pdj7:00 pm PRE-LISTENING\nSESSION: BIBIO ‘Title: tbc’(Warp Records – release:\neind juni) 7:00 pm VOODOO TRANCE SOUND SYSTEMVoodoo\nTrance Sound System was created in assignment to the\nZuiderpershuis in Antwerp\, whereby\ndrummer/percussionist/composer Eric Thielemans joined forces\nwith two exceptional and versatile drummers. Stop! Eric who?\nWe know Eric Thielemans from the likes of the avant garde\njazz of Mâäks’s Spirit\, from the collaborative project\nCoca Cola Met God (once opener to Battles in the AB) with\nTim Vanhamel and also from his irresistible 12" ‘A\nSnare Is A Bell’ on Dennis Tyfus’ Ultra Eczema-label.\nTwo versatile drummers? Yup\, so it was that Eric Thielemans\ninvited American drummer Chris Corsano (see: Björk\, Evan\nParker\, Paul Flaherty\,...) and fellow countryman Jeroen\nStevens (I Love Sarah\, Mauro\,...) to the stage. Finally:\nEric\, what can we expect musically? "Belly oriented\nbeats\, ultra drones and folksy break moves." Good to\nhave that clarified.7:45 pm TIM EXILETim Exile is the brand\nnew acquisition of the famous Warp stables. This classically\ntrained violin player – with a Master of Arts in\nelectro-acoustic composition – already experimented with\nelectronica at a young age. His first love was drum\n’n' bass and that cumulated in various released on the\nfamous Moving Shadow label (remember the likes of EZ\nRollers\, Dom & Roland\,...). The man\, who now resides\nin Berlin\, had his debut album released via Planet Mu. Due\nto dissatisfaction with the limited possibilities of the\nusual DJ equipment\, Tim Exile put together his own. The\nalbum ’Listening Tree’ is soon to appear on Warp (in\ncollaboration with Planet Mu)\, it bridges the gap between\ndance and pop whereby echoes of The Human League are not far\nremoved. There's no doubt that Exile likes a challenge:\nso it was that he recently remixed the Elbipolis Baroque\nOrchestra live on stage. Respect!8:00 pm VENETIAN\nSNARESAlready the third visit to the AB (once live\, once\nbehind the turntables) from the man with the coolest name we\nknow: AARON FUNK. Aaron Funk is\, as ever\, the alter-ego of\nCanadian breakcore (or do you prefer drill ’n' bass?)\nveteran Venetian Snares. His music sounds blatantly brutal\nand explosive. We'll shout a drink to anyone who knows\nhis complete track record by heart. His releases are\ninnumerable (at a guess: about twenty albums)\, just as his\nmonikers. Remember: BeeSnares\, Last Step\, Puff\, Senetian\nVnares\, Snares Man! and Ventriloquist Snakes. Our absolute\nSnares favourite is his ‘Hungarian’ record ‘Rossz\nCsillag Allat Született’ from ’05 that was released via\nPlanet Mu\, the label of Venetian Snares discoverer Mike\nParadinas. On it\, Mr. Funk experimented with classical\nHungarian music from the likes of Béla Bartók. A\nsuccessful recipe that was followed up on ‘My Downfall’.\nFunk says of his rather massive output: "I really\ndon't do much else. I'm not interested in golfing or\nknitting... and most of the time it's too fucking cold\nto leave the house." We completely can't keep up\nwith the releases on smaller labels like Hyme\, Sublight\nRecords or Kriss anymore\, but even so we're very\ncurious about his 10" ‘Sabbath Dubs’ from ’07 (on\nKriss) with dubstep versions of - indeed - Black\nSabbath.10:30 pm SQUAREPUSHERIs this the same Squarepusher\nthat Domino has been trying to get hold of for 13 editions\nalready?? You bet it is! The generally reclusive Tom\nJenkinson made a 90° turn last year: he suddenly became\nrelatively communicative\, started touring intensively and\,\nwhat's more\, he turned up at his own shows! His\noverwhelming appearance at All Tomorrow’s Parties (where\nMike Patton and The Melvins served as curators) certainly\nwon't be forgotten in a hurry. Live drum ‘n' bass\n- with Jenkinson on bass of course – that often equaled\nthe power of metal without renouncing his jazz background\n(Jaco Pastorius!)\, all this supplemented by impressive\nvisuals. Squarepusher hereby proved again that he's\nstill among the world's best electronica performers.\n‘Just A Souvenir’ - now his twelfth album – was\nreleased via his permanent homebase Warp\, that this year\nalso happens to celebrate its 20 year existence. Who'd\nhave thought that Squarepusher\, who we've been\nfollowing here since his debut ‘Feed Me Weird Things’\n(from ’96\, then picked up by Aphex Twin's Rephlex\nlabel)\, would become such an ongoing and influential\nplayer. Squarepusher came the closest to 'a hit'\nwith ‘My Red Hot Car’ (yup\, the real title was indeed\n‘My Red Hot Cock’) and his version of ‘Love Will Tear\nUs Apart’. Squarepusher in the AB? 100%! Now Autechre... \n Squarepusher - Come On My\nSelector Venetian Snares -\nSzerencsétlen
