(or\nhas it moved to a new address)” wondered jazz journalist\nStuart Nicholson (also author of acclaimed biographies about\nDuke Ellington and Billie Holiday) in ‘05 in his book of\nthe same name. His argument: jazz in its land of origin\n(USA) is completely retro while the real renewal - something\nthat should be inherent to the genre - takes place in\nEurope. Nicholson specifically refers to what he calls the\n‘Nordic Tone’ or rather: the completely unique identity\nof Scandinavian jazz. He also regularly refers to ECM (an\noriginally German label but with a strong focus on\nScandinavian jazz) and Rune Grammofon. A label that\ncertainly fits his theory is undoubtedly Smalltown\nSuperjazzz…Smalltown Superjazzz2005 saw the establishment\nof Smalltown Superjazzz (yep\, 3rd time 'Z' is\nlucky) – sister-label to Smalltown Supersound and\nSmalltown Supernoise – which completely focuses on (free)\njazz\, avant garde and improv and is now already 30 releases\nfurther. Their examples? The free jazz labels from the\n60's\, ESP-Disk and BYG Records annex the punk DIY\nlabels SST and Touch & Go. The label is established\naround central duo Norwegian drummer Paal Nilssen-Love and\nsaxophonist Mats Gustafsson (whose projects like The Thing\,\nLean Left and Offonoff reside on the label). Thurston Moore\nand Jim O’ Rourke find an outlet there too\, for projects\nlike Original Silence and Diskaholics Anonymous. Peter\nBrötzmann and Ken Vandermark complete the impressive list.\nA musical introduction is to be found in the compilation\n‘The Blasting Concept’. The majority of Smalltown\nSuperjazzz album covers are sober black & white and\ncreated by reputed Norwegian graphic designer Rune\nMortensen.8:00 pm - Splatter [Mats Gustafsson & Paal\nNilssen-Love]Bands that provide their own support-act: you\ndon't come across them very often. The duo\nSplatter came into being when main-label Smalltown\nSupersound celebrated its 10 year anniversary in Oslo (that\nresulted in an EP recording from ’04 that will be\nre-released at the end of this year). In the\nbeginning their repertoire consisted primarily of free jazz\nstandards by David Murray\, Frank Lowe and Norman Howard.\nBut these days the band presents equally explosive covers of\nPJ Harvey (‘To Bring You My Love’)\, The Sonics (‘Have\nLove Will Travel’)\, The White Stripes (‘Aluminium’)\nor the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (‘Art Star’). The line-up?\nSwedish saxophonist Mats Gustafsson is one of the biggest\nnames in the contemporary free-music scene\, while Norwegian\ntandem Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (contrabass) and drummer Paal\nNilssen-Love are often referred to as ‘Norway`s heaviest\nrhythm-section’.
