DESCRIPTION:Sioen headed to the township Soweto in South Africa in 2008\nat the invitation of Oxfam's 'One Day For Another\nWorld' campaign\, in order to establish a collaboration\nwith local musicians. There he met living legends Pops\nMohamed (kora\, kalimba\, m'bira) and Khaya Mahlangu\n(saxophonist with the likes of Hugh Masekela)\, and together\nwith Stella Khumalo (backing vocalist with the likes of\nMiriam Makeba) he organised an audition in the heart of\nSoweto from which 4 brilliant backing vocalists were\nselected. During the last Gentse Feesten he brought the\nmusicians to Belgium and the performance that bubbled with\nmelody and energy was an immediate success and 'talk of\nthe town'. De Standaard wrote: "We're always\nsympathetic to someone who gives a new repertoire a baptism\nof fire before an audience. Sioen also succeeded with flying\ncolours!"Fast forward to 2009. Encouraged by the\nenthusiasm of the audience during the Gentse Feesten\,\nSioen\, together with Laurens Smagghe (Sioen's regular\ndrummer)\, Mirko Banovic (bass for Arno and Arsenal) and\nFrederik Segers (guitarist from Members of Marvelas) from\nGhent\, headed to Johannesburg to record the record\n'Calling Up Soweto' with the South African\nmusicians. 'To the township of the townships\, where I\ntook my boots. On the train to Naledi\, where Jo'burg\nhas its roots. To the sound of revolution\, and the vibe on\nthe streets. When I'm gone I sing the blues\, in\nSoweto\, that's where I lost my shoes'.
