SUMMARY:Shirley Collins - Alasdair Roberts - Stephanie Hladowski
LOCATION:AB Club - staand (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:& present SHIRLEY COLLINS ‘America Over The\nWater’In 1959 Shirley Collins and Alan Lomax left together\nto travel for a year in the musical heart of the Southern\nStates of America. During this trip they made recordings\nduring religious and social gatherings\, at funerals and of\nthe chain gangs. In this way they discovered the likes of\nlegendary bluesman Mississippi Fred McDowell. These original\nrecordings were later also used in the Coen Brothers'\nfilm ‘Oh Brother\, Where Art Thou’.The book ‘America\nOver The Water’ tells their story\, interlaced with\nanecdotes from her youth during and after the second World\nWar in Hastings\, in Britain\, and also her first meeting\nwith Alan Lomax in London. Assisted by actor Pip Barnes and\nsupported by unique image and sound material\, Collins knows\nhow to bring the story to life again on stage. A 2 hour show\nthat will carry you back to the heart of this fantastic Alan\nLomax project and only the second time that it will have\nbeen presented outside of England. ALASDAIR ROBERTSOn\n‘Spoils’\, the new album from Caledonian bard Alasdair\nRoberts on the Drag City label (see too: label- and soulmate\nJoanna Newsom)\, the singer-songwriter returns increasingly\nto past centuries. Old instruments play a leading role on\nthis fourth solo album\, bringing back to life music that\nmany of us have forgotten\, all of this is to serve the\nRoberts' breathtaking melodies. ‘His finest work to\ndate’ (Uncut)‘Magnificently unique’ (Observer Music\nMonthly)In its March 2009 edition\, fRoots magazine spent 6\ncomplete pages covering the new draft of British folk\nartists . After careful study and making contact with the\nperformers in question (long live MySpace)\, 1 other leading\nplayer in that article will be coming to Brussels too:The\nmost enigmatic figure on the bill is undoubtedly 24-year-old\nStephanie Hladowski. She acts like a recluse but if you hear\nher sing ‘Willy O’Winsbury’ or ‘The Month Of\nJanuary’\, you be bombarded with the most fiery of\nemotions. Her grandparents are from Poland and so she\nintroduces Eastern-European elements to her music\, which\nsometimes makes it seem like you're listening to a gypsy\nsong that was recorded in the 50's. In the trivia\nsection\, just this: her brother Chris Hladowski is a member\nof A Hawk And A Hacksaw\, that other Eastern-European\ninfluenced folk music band (who just recently appeared at\nLes Nuits Botanique). An evening with the best of the new\ndraft of British folk. As late afternoon introduction by\nnone less than British folk icon Shirley Collins with her\nstory of the journey she made to America with Alan Lomax in\n’59.In autumn 2009\, the AB will be organising a tribute\nto the American ethno-musicologist Alan Lomax (1915-2002).\nIt is thanks to his pioneering work that anyone can now\nacquaint themselves with the earliest folksong recordings.\nTogether with his father\, he was responsible for the\ndiscovery of blues legend Leadbelly and folk icon Woody\nGuthrie. Lomax was later the most important staff member of\nthe Archive of Folk Song or to the Library of Congress in\nWashington. Shirley Collins couldn't be left out of this\ntribute either. This leading lady of British folk met Alan\nLomax in London in the early 50's. He later took her on\nhis most famous journey through the Southern part of the\nUnited States. A wonderful book about that journey was\npublished in 2004\, ‘America Over The Water’\, which she\nwill now bring to life on stage. Following in her wake -\naccording to the prominent fRoots magazine - 2 of the best\nnewcomers of the British folk scene: Alasdair Roberts and\nStephanie Hladowski. \nSTEPHANIE HLADOWSKI
