SUMMARY:Shahkilid
LOCATION:AB Club - staand (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:& present Mauro Pawlowski presents : a SUBLIME\nFREQUENCIES labelnight feat. SHAHKILID (Bel/Iran) + NATHAN\nSALSBURG + The screening of a Sublime Frequencies DVD + A\nDJ-set by Mauro PawlowskiIn autumn 2009 the AB will be\norganising a tribute to the American ethno-musicologist Alan\nLomax (1915-2002). It is thanks to his pioneering work that\nanyone can now acquaint themselves with the earliest\nfolksong recordings. Together with his father\, he was\nresponsible for the discovery of blues legend Leadbelly and\nfolk icon Woody Guthrie. Lomax was later the most important\nstaff member of the Archive of Folk Song or to the Library\nof Congress in Washington. As part of this tribute\, the AB\nwill be organising an evening with American label Sublime\nFrequencies (sublimefrequencies.com) that\, just as labels\nlike Damon Albarn’s Honest Jon’s\, carries on the work\nof Alan Lomax. Sublime Frequencies mainly works with 4\ndifferent categories: field-recording\, folk & pop\ncompilations\, collages of radio programmes from remote\nareas and DVD’s. Each time in limited issues. The sources\nare mainly to be found in South-East Asia\, North-Africa and\nthe Middle-East. Jack-of-all-trades\, but currently mostly\ndEUS guitarist\, Mauro Pawlowski has already been a fan for\nyears and now has the opportunity to curate this evening. He\nchose for 2 live concerts\, the screening of a DVD from the\nSublime Frequencies catalogue and a DJ-set in which he\npresents his personal collection of Sublime Frequencies\nalbums. After the unfortunate cancelation of Sir Richard\nBishop\, we hastily attempted to seek a replacement ... and\nfound it in the form of Davood Varzideh : neyDavood Varzideh\nstudied physics at the University of Teheran. He became a\nstudent of Hassan Nahid (a ney master) 18 years ago and he\ncontinued through all levels of training. Four years later\nhe was already playing with the band of santur-grandmaster\nFaramarz Payvaar. The year after that he became one of\nPayvaar's permanent members. He works together with the\nIranian radio and television as a studio-musician. He has\nperformed in Japan\, Indonesia\, Malaysia\, Central-Asia\,\nEurope. His style is influenced by the masters Hassan\nKassaï\, Hassan Nahid and also\, in part\, by Mohamad Ali\nKiyaninejad. He commands the old style\, to which he applies\ncontemporary nuances and effects. He is also extremely\nfamiliar with the ney-style of Turkish and Arabian\nmusic.Shahram Mirjalali: tar\, barbat (oud)\, setar.\nMirjalali is currently considered to be the\npoint-of-reference in the Esfahan-school as it was developed\nby master Jalil Shahnaz. At the age of seven\, he began to\nlearn the tar with his sister\, who already played tar and\nviolin. From the age of 10 he began to teach himself barbat\nand oud by watching films of Arabian musicians. When he was\n12 he was invited to the Art and Culture Orchestra of\nKhoozestan to play oud. He was taught by master Shahnaz and\nmaster Kassaei. On tar he has been influenced by the Esfahan\nstyle of music. He is generally considered to be one of the\nbest setar- and tar-players around and he usually plays on\nself-made instruments. He's a member of various\nensembles such as Sama'a\, Bidel\, Arghanoon and Shahin\nSepehr\, with which he plays extensively within and outside\nof Iran. Dadmehr: tombak\, dafDadmehr began his musical\ncareer 20 years ago as a student of great modern\ntombak-master Amir Naser Eftetah. He subsequently trained at\nIran's most important musical centre Hefz va Eshaeh\nunder the masters Mahmood Farahmand Bafi and Bahman Rahjabi.\nHe also studied violin with Alireza Tavousi and at the\nconservatorium of Teheran with Shamloo Karband. He is\ngenerally praised for his virtuosity and his search for the\nrichenss of the tombak's sound. So it was that he\nreceived first prize in the solo-competition at the festival\nof Fahjr in 1991. Before he moved to Europe\, Dadmehr worked\nas musician for the Iranian television and he often\nperformed with Shahram Mirjalal (barbat\, tar). In Europe he\noften plays together with Hamid Motebassem (Dastan\nEnsemble).Sébastien Walnier: celloChamber music on cello\nwas Sébastien Walnier's thing from an early age. This\npassion gave him the opportunity to perform on international\nstages with the likes of Roland Pidoux\, Eliane Reyes\,\nThanos Adamopoulos\, Jean-Claude Pennetier\, Daniel\nBlumenthal\, Jean-Claude Vanden Eyden\, Véronique\nBogaerts\, Luc Dewez\, Boris Belkin ... He studied at the\nConservatoire Royal in Luik\, under Maryse Douin for cello\nand Cécile Evrard for chamber music. He later completed his\nstudies with Edmond Carlier\, disciple of André Navarra.\nThe contact with Roland Pidoux at the Parisian Conservatoire\nNational Supérieur was an important step in his career.\nAfter tuition from Daria Hovora and Michaël Hentz he formed\nthe Talweg Trio together with Sébastien Surel (violin) and\nAlexander Gurning (piano). He is often to be heard in duo\nwith pianist Eliane Reyes.\n\nhttps://www.abconcerts.be/en/agenda/shahkilid/a105J000001wgb9QAA
