DESCRIPTION:Rupa is a funny songstress. That's why her band is\ncalled The April Fishes. Together they make immensely\nenjoyable folk-rock\, for fans of Les Négresses Vertes\,\nGogol Bordello\, Jaune Toujours\, Manu Chao\, Beirut and\nespecially Lhasa! Here's an impressive quote from SF\nWeekly: 'If local singer Rupa were a movie\, she would\nbe Amélie meets Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown\nmeets Latcho Drom meets Do the Right Thing. She'd be set\nin India and Berkeley...She would be (and\, in fact\, is) an\ninstant cult classic among the smart\, idealistic\,\ninternational set.' SF here is short for San Francisco\,\nthe current homebase of this Indian lady who grew up in\nFrance and North America (and meanwhile also graduated as a\ndoctor.) 'Extraordinary Rendition' is Rupa's\ndebut CD and her small team: a multi-lingual and extremely\ncharming disc (on the Cumbancha label and here via\nMunich.)As TimeOut Chicago also shouted: 'Rupa & the\nApril Fishes Global Agit-Pop'!    Support-act will be\nnone less than Devon Sproule. Practise the name just quickly\n(in London they've already played the Shepherd's\nBush Empire and also toured with Richie Havens!). Canadian\nand American and grew up in a hippie commune\, but\nespecially a clear voice and playful lyrics and presence.\nBetween jazzy and country\, or between Madeleine Peyroux and\nGillian Welch!? She was already touring and releasing before\nshe was 18\, now her third CD is out: 'Keep Your Silver\nShined'. We expect Devon Sproule as a duo with husband\nPaul Curreri\, and from there there are then links to the\nThe Killers via Devon Sproule And Her In-Laws and The\nEx-Friends. But that's another matter.
