SUMMARY:Rune Grammofon presents Puma + Phonophani w/ Sigbjørn Apela
nd + Stian Westerhus
LOCATION:AB Club - staand (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:RUNE GRAMMOFON presents PUMA + PHONOPHANI w/ SIGBJØRN\nAPELAND + STIAN WESTERHUSRune Grammofon – based in Oslo\nand established in 1998 – is now onto its 100th release\n(with the latest one\, a collector: ‘Twenty Centuries Of\nStony Sleep’). Founding father Rune Kristoffersen was once\nbassist to new wave/synthpop band Fra Lippo Lippi (remember\nthe hit ‘Shouldn’t Have To be Like That’ from ‘86)\nand also made albums under the moniker Monolight. Rune\nGrammofon houses the most idiosyncratic\, adventurous and\ncreative Norwegian performers\, those for whom musical\nborders are non-existent.Rune: “Our aim is to put love and\ncare into each release\, giving it the best possible design\nand packaging. No plastic\, ever. All releases come in the\ndigipak format with exclusive design”. That design is from\nthe hand of Norwegian graphic designer\, filmmaker\,\nillustrator and musician Kim Hiorthøy.Be sure to check out\nthe Rune Grammofon expo that runs from 1 December to 31\nDecember in the AB Café/Resto (Steenstraat 23) and also in\nLa Vitrine (Ou)verte (Steenstraat 26).The label navigates\nmusically between free jazz\, experimental electronica and\nimprov. The most well-known bands include Supersilent\,\nMotorpsycho\, Susanna (And The Magical Orchestra)\,\nShining\, The Low Frequency In Stereo… AB will focus on\nthe label's latest releases during this Rune Grammofon\nevening\, releases that can quite simply be called\nimpressive\, with … 8:00 pm - Stian WesterhusStian\nWesterhus is quite simply one of the most talented\nguitarists of the Norwegian experimental music scene.\nHe's the originator of the trio PUMA\, half of the\nnoise/metal project MONOLITHIC (with Motorpsycho drummer\nKenneth Kapstad)\, he was once a part-time member of JAGA\nJAZZIST (and played with them on their latest album\n‘One-Armed Bandit’) and is currently a member of Nils\nPetter Molvær´s new trio. Aside from a vinyl only release\n(‘Galore’)\, he now debuts on Rune Grammofon with the\nmuch acclaimed ‘Pitch Black Star Spangled’ . The Wire\nwrote of it: “as intricately baffling as anything by\nAutechre”.9:00 pm - Phonophani w/ Sigbjørn\nApelandPhonophani is the alter-ego of Espen Sommer Eide\,\nNorway's most original and most inventive electronica\nmusician around. Eide is both multi-instrumentalist\, expert\nin digital electronica and also an instrument-maker... which\nlargely explains why his music sounds so unique. Eide is at\nthe same time ½ of the duo Alog that he established in\n’97 and with which he has already chalked up 5 albums (of\nwhich 4 on Rune Grammofon). With this Phonophani project\nEide attempts to fuse acoustic instruments (cello\,\nvibraphone\, guitar\, the human voice\,…) with\nelectronica. His fourth album ‘Kreken’ was just recently\nreleased (with collaboration from the likes of David Grubbs)\nand on it each song was named after place in Norway.\nEspecially for AB\, Sigbjørn Apeland will be coming along\ntoo (also to be heard on ‘Kreken’). He's the a\nharmonium/pump organ player who can be heard on many Rune\nGrammofon albums (Nils Økland\, Alog\,…).10:00 pm -\nPumaNorwegian trio Puma is often considered to be the\nyounger cousin of Supersilent. The latest (third) album\n‘Half Nelson Courtship’ is also their first on Rune\nGrammofon and is one in which the comparisons with King\nCrimson (’73 period) are not far-fetched. One thing is for\nsure: Puma – with Stian Westerhus as driving force – is\none of the most impressive up and coming bands in the ever\ngrowing Norwegian experimental music scene that seamlessly\ncombines improvisation\, jazz\, electronica and free rock.\nThe Wire on the subject: “Puma possess a romantic take on\nimprovisation\, cutting Westerhus’ guitar with wild free\ndrumming and a symphonic sense of grandeur.” Aside from\nWesterhus\, drummer Gard Nilssen (Bushman’s Revenge) and\nJaga Jazzist keyboard player Øystein Moen form the other\ntwo thirds of the band.
