SUMMARY:Raime + Psychologist + Demdike Stare
LOCATION:AB Salon - zittend (Steenstraat 11\, 1000 Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm SOUNDTRACK BY: Blackest Ever Black (UK)Blackest Ever\nBlack is a brand new label from London with just 3 releases\nto its name (Raime\, Tropic Of Cancer\,…). Those visiting\ntheir site website can immediately sample the mood: dark\,\nmysterious and\, above all\, intriguing. Their site consists\nof fantastic photos you can click on to arrive in a parallel\nmusical world ruled by Nico\, Dead Can Dance\, Nocturnal\nEmissions and Eyeless In Gaza. In other words: what\ninfluences this young label. For the rest: behind the label\nyou'll find respected FACT-journalist Kiran Sande\,\nwho'll be doing the honours behind the turntables on\nthis evening.8:30 pm Demdike Stare (UK)Demdike Stare – or:\nthe gaze of a witch who died before being tried - is the\nmoniker of two British producers who create an intriguing\nmix of drones\, dubstep and world music. Their leitmotiv is\nwitchcraft and occultism\, their music sounds as\nunpredictable as it is intangible. No surprise then that\nthey also have a skull integrated into their logo.\nMusically\, there's always a nightmare tangibly close at\nhand. The term witch house suddenly pops up again here.\nPitchfork even wrote "Demdike Stare are even more\ndeserving of the 'witch house' tag than Salem."\nTheir latest – highly commended – feat is the\ntriple/collector album ‘Tryptych’ that was released in\n'10 and immediately awarded an 8.3 by Pitchfork.9:30 pm\nPsychologist (UK)Psychologist – the alter-ego of\nelectronica troubadour Iain Woods from London – first got\nattention with a somewhat disorienting video clip in which a\npregnant man bore a child. The associated song - ‘Comes In\nWaves’ - went right through you. Psychologist's voice\nis also penetrating too. A comparison that often arises:\nJames Blake. Read: man behind piano and echoes of dubstep.\nBut Anthony Hegarty and Jeff Buckley are often mentioned\ntoo. No wonder though as Psychologist also charmingly covers\n‘Song to the Siren’\, a Tim Buckley song. Psychologist\ncurrently only has one EP out (‘Waves of OK’ ) and he\nhas also only performed once (in the St Matthias Church in\nLondon for only 300 people). Psychologist is going to make\nwaves\, take our word for it. For the first time in\nBelgium.10:30 pm Raime (UK)Behind Raime you'll find a\nmedia shy duo from London\, whose rhythms and use of heavy\,\nslow bass are derived from dubstep but in which the\ninfluence of 80's industrial music is just as\nnoticeable. Their music is dark and spare – without\nsounding bare – but is claustrophobic more than anything\nelse. Connections are usually made with names like\nShackleton (the innovative dubstep producer) and witch house\nact Balam Acab. Their first two EPs (on Blackest Ever Black)\nhave now been sold out and to quite some effect: Altered\nZones (the little brother of Pitchfork) and Boomkat\n(“Outstanding!”) proclaim their fan status to all who\nwill listen. Welcome to this ‘Dark Night Of The Soul’. \n Psychologist at St. Mattias Church - Waves Of\nOK from Tali Clarke on Vimeo. Comes In Waves from\npsychologist on Vimeo.
