DESCRIPTION:What's the story these days\, with all those bearded\nyoung men who suddenly (re)discover the splendour of vocal\nharmonies and the craftsmanship of songwriting? Following on\nfrom the likes of BON IVER and FLEET FOXES (on 20/11 in\nAB!)\, we now have Port O'Brien maintaining the\ntradition of the American folk-rock bands of the 70's\nand giving it their own\, contemporary twist. Port\nO'Brien (named after the Alaskan bay where\nguitarist/singer Van Pierszalowski goes every year for\nseveral months in order to work on his parent's salmon\nfarm) have just released their first official album 'All\nWe Could Do was Sing' (on City Slang / V2). This album\nis full of fine songs and beautiful harmonies\, mostly\nplayed on acoustic instruments and with as main themes: the\nsea and a fisherman's existence. But don't be\nmistaken\, Port O'Brien don't play seafarer's\nsongs. You can hear echoes of the likes of Neil Young\,\nArcade Fire and Modest Mouse in their work ... and they dare\nto be rather rugged on stage\, the energy drips from it\,\nresulting in performances that are already regularly\nlabelled as unforgettable. You surely already know the\nsingle 'I Woke Up Today' from Radio 1\, now let\nyourself be convinced of the power of their live\nperformance. This will probably be one of your last chances\nto see this band in the intimate surroundings of the AB Club\nas these guys and girl from Port O'Brien will soon be\nbig!    We'll be opening with The Rodeo\, that's an\nAmerican singer-songstress who resides in France and keeps\nher real name meticulously disguised (apparently something\nfor the anagramaniacs amongst us). Musically she works from\nthe strange but apparently interesting common ground\nbetween\, say\, Bob Dylan and Joanna Newsom. She's\nalready shared a stage with musical kindred spirits like My\nBrightest Diamond and Nina Nastasia.
