SUMMARY:Patrice + Keziah Jones
LOCATION:AB Grote zaal (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:An exclusive\, funky double-bill with two brilliant\nperformers: KEZIAH JONES and PATRICE\, both with African\nroots and both too with a unique and exciting musical\ncrossover. A fine performer\, PATRICE. Blessed with a\nsupple\, sensitive voice and a master in his very own genre.\nWith all the best elements of funk\, soul\, folk\, pop-rock\nand reggae very virtuously intertwined. Of course we still\nhear BOB Marley as a great influence\, but so too the new\ngeneration reggae à la GENTLEMAN\, up to and including the\nmusical approach of say AYO or ASA or SARA Tavares.\n'Free-Patri-Ation'\, that's the name of his\nlatest CD on Universal (with the likes of Ayo and Seun Kuti\ntoo!). Further\, Patrice takes us away on an exciting and\neducational musical trip. With songs like Dove Of Peace\,\nPraise His Name and\, of course\, also the fine word-play on\nwords from the CD title. The refined production was in the\nhands of Commissioner Gordon\, who also won prizes with\n'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill'. Patrice is the\nchild of a German mother and an African father. His full\nname is Patrice Babatunde Bart-Williams and that's a\nname with its own story: Patrice like Lumumba\, the first\nCongolese premier; Babatunde apparently means 'the\nreturn of father' (Patrice was born on the day that his\ngrandfather died); and lastly Bart-Williams like his\ndeceased father Gaston (author and activist in Siera Leone).\nBut the world simply knows him as Patrice... and it is\nthanks to performers like Patrice it's a slightly\nhappier world too! KEZIAH JONES comes from Nigeria\, but\ngrew up musically on the streets of London and Paris. Since\nthe start of the 90's he's been releasing his\nimpressive CDs on the French hallmark Because (see also Manu\nChao). He calls his genre 'blufunk' and it's\ncharacterized especially by his forceful 'slapping'\nattack on the guitar. Greats and deceased super-talents like\nFela Kuti and Jimi Hendrix nod along approvingly from the\nrock 'n' roll heavens. This is clearly someone who\ndoes it best on his own\, what we hear at the moment on his\nMyspace is that tasty mix of sensitive songs and and fiercer\nfloor fillers. These tracks should provide a preview of the\nnew material that is being finished off at the moment in the\nUSA . The single will be the clever 'My Kinda Girl'\nand the witty CD title 'Nigerian Wood'. This must be\nabout Keziah Jones' fifth CD\, following on from his\nexceptionally successful and telling 'Black\nOrpheus'.
