SUMMARY:Nico Muhly + Xela + Svarte Greiner
LOCATION:AB Theater (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:8:00 pm SVARTE GREINERSvarte Greiner is the alter-ego of\nErik Skodvin\, crown prince of Norwegian doomscapes. Erik\nSkodvin is also 50% of Deaf Center\, our favourite Type\nRecords artist. He has meanwhile released two intriguing\,\nimmensely dark albums on Type: ‘Knive’ and his latest\n‘Kappe’\, the latter was with collaboration from Kjetil\nMoster from Ultralyd (check out their album on Load\nRecords). That Svarte also makes music for installations\nshould come as no surprise. So it was that he just recently\ndid the sound design for ‘Interval II’\, for\nBritish/Chinese artiest Siki Chan. Lastly\, Boomkat about\n‘Kappe’: "There's a real air of restraint about\n‘Kappe’\, and it's an album loaded with dark\nenergy\, always poised ambiguously between outright aural\npunishment and an impenetrably black chasm. A masterclass in\norganic\, artful gloom."9:00 pm XELAXela is the\nalter-ego of John Twells\, ½ label-boss of the ever\nintriguing Type Records (see: Goldmund\, Sickoakes\,\nMidaircondo\, Deaf Center…). He's a musical busy bee.\nHis debut ‘Frosty Mornings And Summer Nights' already\nsounded impressive with its subtle mix of minimal clicks\n‘n cuts\, blown-away hip-hop beats and a dash of\nindie-rock. He also released ‘The Dead Sea’ - as a\nquickie on the City Centre Offices from Berlin (see also:\nSwod\, etc.) - and his just recently released album is ‘In\nBocca Al Lupo’\, Latin for ‘In the mouth of the wolf’.\nXela usually releases concept albums\, so it happens that\n‘In Bocca…’ is about fear and Christianity. Webzine\nCaleidoscoop wrote of it: "It grabs you by the throat\,\nleaving you as devastated as just having seeing David\nLynch's Eraserhead. Never before has Xela made such a\nheavy\, compelling and dark piece. An unbelievable\,\nindescribable aural experience." No real surprise if\nyou know that Twells says he's influenced by the work of\nItalian masters-of-horror like Dario Argento\, Lucio Fulci\nor American counterpart George A. Romero. He already made an\nimpression at the Feeërieën with XELA and also as DJ\nbehind the turntables during the first Type Records night at\nDomino in ’06. Welcome back John! 10:00 pm NICO MUHLY \n What do Antony & The Johnsons\, Björk and Kate Winslet\nall have in common (aside from the fact that two of the\nthree adorn our laminated ‘laminated favourite one night\nstand list’)? Yup: it's American pianist Nico Muhly\,\nwho previously already worked with minimal composer Philip\nGlass (with whom he's often composed stage works &\nfilm scores). So you can hear Nico Muhly on the likes of\nAntony & The Johnsons' latest album ‘The Crying\nLight’ and the stunning EP ‘Another World’. You're\na Björk fan? Then take a good look at the liner notes from\n‘Medúlla’ or the score of Matthew Barney’s film\n‘Drawing Restraint 9’ or ‘Volta’. Then we\nhaven't even mentioned his work for Rufus Wainwright or\nBonnie 'Prince' Billy. His albums for Iceland's\nBedroom Community-label ('Speaks Volumes' and\n‘Mothertongue’) are exceptionally intriguing. But\nthey're especially filmy and have an extremely classical\ncharacter. The film ‘The Reader’ is soon to be released\nin Belgian cinemas\, has already been heaped with award\nnominations\, is based on the novel by Bernhard Schlink\,\nand has Kate Winslet (now we're there!) in the leading\nrole. The soundtrack was provided by none less than Nico\nMuhly. Are you prepared for a particularly enchanting\nevening? Nico Muhly - It Goes\nWithout Saying
