SUMMARY:Music for Life Benefit 2011 - Absynthe Minded + Mintzkov + T
eddiedrum + Jim Cole + Discobar Galaxie ...
LOCATION:AB Grote zaal (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:Music for life 2011 is the last one in a amazing row. It\nstarted as an adventure in 2006 in Leuven and has developed\nitself each year into an enormous success and solidarity\naround X-mas. Studio Brussels want to conclude in style in 3\ncities: Leuven\, Ghent\, Antwerp\, as from 17 up to 23\nDecember. 2 Days before the starting Music For life 2011 a\nMusic For Life Benefit already takes place in AB in\nBrussels\, initiated by www.people4.be and the AB. 4\nfantastic Belgian Bands & Discobar Galaxie (after-party)\nhave confirmed their booking. They play as a benefit for you\nand the money goes directly to Music For life 2011. Each\neuro spend counts double: you enjoy a great musical evening\nand party and your money is contributing to a good cause\,\nMusic For life 2011.Absynthe Minded. Since dEUS\, Zita Swoon\nand the inevitable “Godfather” Arno arrived on the\nscene\, Belgium has\, as everyone knows\, established itself\nas the hub of European rock on the old continent. Like their\ncinema - which despite the very modest size of the country\ncan inextricably engage us in its improbable road movies -\nBelgian rockers have always displayed a gift for\nconstructing and freely exploring vast sonic spaces\, with\nthe horizon their only limit. It is almost as if the\nproximity of the English coast plays a part. Bert Ostyn is\nthe guy with the Rubik's Cube on the cover of Absynthe\nMinded\, a fourth album that rather miraculously sums up the\ngroup’s progress and fascinating palette of sounds - from\nfolk rock to Gypsy swing via indie rock and quasi-noise\nambiences. At his side\, Jan Duthoy (piano\, Hammond\norgan)\, Sergej Van Bouwel (double bass)\, Renaud Ghilbert\n(violin) and Jakob Nachtergaele (drums) play expertly on\ntheir devilishly vintage instruments to weave musical\nclimates that are mainly acoustic\, but can also turn stormy\nor bring a delicious jazz front sweeping in\, taking the\nform of a guitar solo. In a relatively short time\, Absynthe\nMinded acquired something of a reputation\, and not only in\nthe bars they tirelessly toured (as their name might\nsuggest). “My Heroics\, Part One” (Bert insists on the\nirony of the title)\, voted best song of the decade by\nFlemish radio station Studio Brussel\, and which is included\nas a bonus track on the new album for those who missed the\nprevious episodes. In 2010 their album immediately won the\nquintet four Belgian Music Industry Awards in January\,\nincluding best album\, best single (for "Envoi")\nand best alternative-rock group. They are now recording\n& mixing their new album in Paris which will be released\nin 2012. They already sold out the AB and we are really\nexcited that they are headlining this benefit in the\nAB.Mintzkov\, 10 years went by since Mintzkov won first\nprize in Belgium‟s most prestigious battle of the bands\nHumo’s Rock Rally. They were still called Mintzkov Luna at\nthat point. In the course of the noughties the fivesome\nmanaged to carve out their own unique musical niche.\nMintzkov‟s output consists of tuneful pop ditties that are\ntailor-made for the radio. Careful listeners will notice\nhowever that there are lots of strange things going on\nbeneath the surface. Despite the commanding presence of wiry\nguitars and whimsical time signatures\, the songs tend to\ncome out catchy as hell. This explains why Mintzkov‟s\nmusic is equally appreciated outside of their native\nBelgium. In Mintzkov‟s bible every album released has to\nbe remarkably different from the previous one and the latest\n„Rising Sun\, Setting Sun‟ is no exception to the rule.\nThe band‟s aim was to open up the music a little more and\nto reach out for a more streamlined and a more dancefloor\norientated sound. Within that context\, the role of keyboard\nplayer Pascal Oorts has become more prominent. “What we\nwere after was a little more movement within the songs”\,\nthe singer offers. “Or rather: a different kind of\nmovement.” Another of Mintzkov‟s principal assets is the\ngorgeous-sounding harmony of Bosschaerts' singing with\nbass player Lies Lorquet. Philip Bosschaerts‟ lyrics are\nno linear stories. Instead you could compare them to a\ncarefully woven tapestry of images and metaphors: “I used\nto be a painter\, but these days I‟m no longer using\ncanvas. I prefer painting with words and look for the visual\nqualities in verbal language”\, the singer says. But as\nyou listen to „Rising Sun\, Setting Sun‟\, it does not\ntake long before certain themes start rising to the surface.\nBosschaerts\, who recently celebrated his thirtieth\nbirthday\, seems to be obsessed with the passing of time and\ncrossing borders\, geographical or otherwise. This time\nthere is also a huge amount of acceptance and resignation in\nthe songs. “There are things in life you can do nothing\nabout\, so you‟d better not waste any time or energy\ntrying. Just go with the flow. Maybe it‟s a part of us\ngrowing older\, but these days we are totally at peace with\nwhat we do. Mintzkov is about the way we express ourselves.\nThe band reflects who we are\, take it or leave\nit.”Teddiedrum. Meet Dijf and Jason from Teddiedrum. Their\nsleeping pattern and civil status might be different\, but\nthese two lads do share more than an immaculately groomed\nmoustache! Today\, best friends Dijf and Jason tap into\ntheir childhood memories of Knightrider episodes\, Jan\nHammer's Miami Vice theme\, Belgium's new beat craze\nand Synthesizer Greatest compilation cassettes when they\nhammer it out in their homestudio. When speaking about their\nmusic\, Dijf and Jason resort to phrases like 'dreamy\nwithout being fluffy'\, 'mystical without going all\nJim Morrison-esque' and 'something wave\nsomething'. Essentially\, Teddiedrum pack their breezy\,\noff-kilter synthpop with some unexpected punches. They\ndon't fray from the experimental but never take their\neye of the melody. According to Dijf and Jason\, it's\nthe drumsound that dictates the song. Their collection of\ntoys (including the Yamaha DX7\, Casio MG-500\, Commodore 64\nand the DG20 MIDI guitar) are stuffed with custom\,\npre-recorded hits\, kicks and homemade synth patches.\nAccording to Texas chillwave band Neon Indian\, who've\nTeddiedrum supported\, they have 'the coolest set-up\never'\, and Soulwax were so impressed by the boys'\nfresh sound that they invited the pair on their SoulwaX-mas\nextravaganza. Now in the AB. Check “Miami” and “Odd\nLovers” on You Tube. Jim Cole. Jimmy Colman\, a young\nsinger songwriter from Geraardsbergen\, appeared in the\nspotlights over the last couple of years surrounded by an\nexquisite band. The fresh sounding “Someday Charlotte”\nwas an instant Belpop Classic. `When love is not enough’\,\nthe new album\, was recorded on analogue tapes in the oldest\nBelgian music recording studio. This led to a deep warm\,\ntrue soul sound. Jim Cole is excelling in mixing ingredients\nas old soul\, funk and tight R&B to a unique proper\nstyle and a contemporary sound. Soul in Flanders!: it does\nexist. Discobar Galaxie closes this benefit with an\nextra-ordinary after-party. DJ Loveboat (Adriaan Van den\nHoof)\, DJ Lars Capaldi and DJ Bobby Ewing will perform on\nABs’ Main stage and cheer up once again the audience; for\nover a decade they excel in setting crowds on fire. Music\nstyles at Discobar Galaxie go beyond all genre limits; mixes\nare astonishing\, out of time\, trendy & surprising\n& that all at once. They yearly perform on Marktrock\,\nLaundry Day and Tomorrowland\, but also in the Joe Piler\nSaloon at Rock Werchter. After a lot of years Discobar\nGalaxie is still going strong and they still play whatever\nthe hell they like. From the largest festival to this\nbenefit for Music For Life in the AB\, these lords will make\nyou move. Damn right!
