SUMMARY:Moriarty - Magnolia Electric Co. - The Tallest Man on Earth
- Charlie Parr
LOCATION:AB Box (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:& present End Of The Road presents ... an evening\nof contemporary folk and roots feat. Moriarty\, Magnolia\nElectric Co.\, The Tallest Man on Earth and Charlie Parr. \n In autumn 2009 the AB will be organising a tribute to\nthe American ethno-musicologist Alan Lomax (1915-2002). It\nis thanks to his pioneering work that anyone can now\nacquaint themselves with the earliest folksong recordings.\nTogether with his father\, he was responsible for the\ndiscovery of blues legend Leadbelly and folk icon Woody\nGuthrie. Lomax was later the most important staff member of\nthe Archive of Folk Song or to the Library of Congress in\nWashington. As part of this tribute\, the AB will be\norganising an evening with performers who have incorporated\nfolk and roots music into their contemporary sound in an\nexciting way. A festival that\, for several years now\,\nwould appear to have the best nose for the genre is the\nBritish END OF THE ROAD festival in Dorset in the South-West\nof England. A festival that feels strongly about small-scale\nand where performers know how to preserve their uniqueness\nunder the best possible circumstances. On their stage this\nyear: the likes of Alela Diane\, Steve Earle and Fleet\nFoxes. The programmers of the festival\, together with AB\,\nhave compiled a satellite-bill for Brussels\, an\ninternational co-production\, as it were.More info: END OF\nTHE ROAD Moriarty is no longer an unknown in France\, or\nby extension Brussels. They sold-out the Botanique 2x in the\npast and\, thanks to the festivals\, they're gradually\nfinding their way into Flanders. This French-American\ncollective draws inspiration from a rich tradition of folk\,\ncountry\, Americana and jazz\, but knows how to mix those\ninfluences into an extremely original 'country\nnoir'. Singer Rosemary's distinctive\, dreamy\,\nvocal sound is timelessly classy and beautifully suits the\nmelancholy lyrics of their debut album ‘Gee Whiz But This\nIs A Lonesome Town’. Oh\, yeah\, and Arthur and Thomas\nfrom Moriarty have travelled in genuine Lomax style\nthemselves\, through Africa and America\, and will most\nlikely have a few stories to tell about that.Magnolia\nElectric Co.\, together with frontman Jason Molina (see\nalso: Songs: Ohia)\, drops into the AB in Brussels for a\nthird time. Their most recent feat was a 4-track single\ntitled ‘It’s Made Me Cry’\, released for Record Store\nDay and still recorded with their now unfortunately deceased\nbassist Evan Farrell. So in the past Molina also operated\nunder the name Songs: Ohia\, or even solo (see: a sold-out\nABClub in February 2007). Those who have already seen\nMagnolia Electric Co. at work live\, know what sort of\ningenious musical things the band is capable of. Molina’s\ndeep lyrics never bore for a moment either. Flawlessly\nsupported by his band\, that maintain the balance between\nthe sound of Neil Young and Bonnie ‘Prince’\nBilly."He reminds me of a young Dave Van Ronk"\n(Greg Brown) Charlie Parr’s mix of country blues and\nfolk leaves a deep impression. His raw voice\, socially\nsound lyrics and intense guitar rhythms make him an\nimportant protagonist within contemporary American folk\nmusic. He set his first steps toward folk via Alan Lomax. He\ncame into contact with those field-recordings via his\nfather. While others his age where then getting into classic\nrock\, Parr immersed himself in the music of kindred spirits\nlike Furry Lewis\, Rev. Gary Davis and Mance Lipscomb. Parr\npresents his new album ‘Roustabout’ in the AB and is\nalso the most traditional name on the bill. The last name\nto be added to this bill is that of American songstress\nLaura Gibson. Her new CD ‘Beasts of Seasons’ (to be\nreleased here at the end of the summer) was very much\nenjoyed in the offices of the AB and contented cooing could\nalso be heard in the headquarters of the British End Of The\nRoad festival (with whom this evening is being organised).\nHer guitar style has its roots in folk and tends slightly\ntoward minimalism and\, why not\, avant-garde. While\, at\nthe same time\, her voice reveals a love for jazz. In this\nway she one minute gives a contemporary face to folk from\nthe Appalachians\, the next she's dusting off sober\ncountry blues. She's worked in the studio with Tucker\nMartine (see: Sufjan Stevens\, Bright Eyes) and could count\non the musical assistance of the likes of Rachel Blumberg\n(M. Ward\, Bright Eyes)\, Nate Query (The Decemberists)\,\nAdam Selzer (M. Ward) and Laura Veirs. The Tallest Man on\nEarth is the rather strange alias of Swede Kristian Matsson.\nHis fine folk is often compared with that of Bob Dylan. Not\ncompletely without reason either: his oeuvre also contains\nthat typical narrative element. His latest offspring\n‘Shallow Grave’ (2008) harvested worldwide success. We\nreckon that the combination of his weathered voice along\nwith that clever guitar work is one of the things that will\nprovide him with a bright future. The Blues Routes Trip\nby Arthur & Thomas of MORIARTY When we spoke to\nMoriarty in March 2009 in the French Legation Museum in\nAustin\, they were immediately prepared to perform as part\nof our tribute to Alan Lomax. The musical connection is also\nalso obvious. After going into the subject further\, it\nbecame apparent that 2 Moriarty members\, Thomas and\nArthur\, had travelled a few authentic blues routes. On 15\nSeptember\, especially for AB\, they will be giving a 30\nminute account of those journeys using images and sound. \n Moriarty - 'Jimmy' \n Magnolia Electric Co. - 'A\nLittle At A Time' \nCharlie Parr - '1922' \n Tallest Man on Earth - The Gardener - A Take Away Show\nfrom La Blogotheque on Vimeo. \nLaura Gibson at OMSI from The Penny Jam on Vimeo.
