SUMMARY:Mono + Health + Handsome Furs + Tiny Masters of Today
LOCATION:AB Box (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:5:00 pm SOUNDTRACK BY… DJ ZEAL 5:00 pm\nPRE-LISTENING SESSION: ISIS ‘Wavering Radiant’ 5:00\npm TINY MASTERS OF TODAYWithout a doubt the youngest band of\nany Domino edition. Tiny Masters of Today is the\nsister/brother duo Ada and Ivan\, hailing from Brooklyn and\nrespectively 13 and 15 years old(!). When Russell Simins\n(drummer to Jon Spencer and sometimes also live with Tiny\nMasters) heard their impressive mix of punk-rock\, garage\nand sometimes even hip-hop via MySpace\, he decided to do\nsomething about it. He produced their debut ‘Bang Bang\nBoom Cake’ (via Mute – unfortunately not released in\nBelgium) and invited a heap of well-knowns: our favorite\nKimya Dawson\, Fred Schneider (B-52s)\, Gibby Haynes\n(Butthole Surfers) and also Karen O & Nick Zinner (Yeah\nYeah Yeahs). Further fans? Oh definitely! David Bowie loudly\nshouted "Genius!" after hearing their first single\nand Anthony Kiedis invited them to the Namu Festival in\nPittsburgh when he served as curator there.6:00 pm MI AMIFor\nthe first time in Belgium: Mi Ami. Currently still to be\ncalled illustrious\, but wait until you hear their debut\n‘Watersports’. This trio from San Francisco loves The\nMinutemen\, awesome tapes from Africa\, Don Cherry and Black\nUhuru’s spliffs. You can hear it too. Pulsing rhythms\,\nfunky vibes\, dubby influences\, all played with a\nfuck-off\, punk mentality. Influential Pitchfork Media about\ntheir debut single ‘Echononecho’: "drum-centric\npunk with Afro-pop leanings\, punched up with the noise and\nlo-fi experimentalist." Finally: Telepathe (the duo\nfrom Brooklyn whose debut was produced by David ‘TV On The\nRadio’ Sitek) and Mi Ami are already friends ... both\nbands have already done it together\, remix-wise.7:00 pm\nHANDSOME FURSWOLF PARADE-fans: Attention please! Handsome\nFurs is the Canadian duo annex husband/wife Alexei Perry\n(electronica) and Wolf Parade-guitarist Dan Boeckner\n(guitar\, vocals). Or to say it with the words of Boeckner\nhimself: "Handsome Furs is basically Wolf Parade\nwithout the guy that everybody likes and no real\ninstruments". The second album that the couple wrote\ntogether\, ‘Face Control’\, will soon be released via\nSub Pop. They were inspired by Eastern Europe. "This\nband is completely based\, aesthetically and otherwise\, on\ntravelling\, on absorbing places and regurgitating them in\nmusic\," according to Boeckner. Ready for an exciting\nportion of rudimentary beats and rattling guitars?8:00 pm\nHEALTHExperimental rock that we at the AB are nuts about.\nThis quartet from LA debuted in ’07 with their album of\nthe same name. The Guardian wrote of it: "artfully\ncrafted noise and raw synth\, haunting monotone vocals\, and\ndrum skills that are borderline insane". Exactly one\nyear later Health allowed its debut to be completely remixed\nand also released ‘Health/Disco’ via New York label\nLovepump United (that released other acts with tasteful\nnames like AIDS Wolf or Child Abuse). Behind the remix-dials\nsat the likes of Crystal Castles\, Pictureplane and also\nWire-journalist Philip Sherburne. The past year Health have\ntoured through America at the request of none less than Nine\nInch Nails. During Domino they'll be delivering a new\nsingle (‘Die Slow’)\, in the summer to be followed by a\nnew album (‘Get Color’). Just a final quote about Health\nfrom Kindamuzik: "Damned noise to the one. Pop\ndeconstructivism to the other. A third person hears a\nblood-curdling noise-rock band in it. Hell\, heaven or\nmadness? You choose." 9:00 pm MONOMono has been\naround for 10 years and that shall be celebrated! Mono and\nAB would also seem to be good friends. Not only is this\nMono’s fourth visit to the AB\, Mono also personally\napproved all the other bands on this bill. Japan’s best\npost-rock band will release ‘Hymn To The Immortal Wind’\nthis spring\, their fifth album to date\, again canned by\nlongtime friend and producer Steve Albini. According to\nMono\, the tracks on the album must be considered as\nchapters in an epic love-story. The addition of a large\nchamber orchestra emphasises this feeling. This spring Mono\nwill celebrate their tenth anniversary in style in New\nYork\, with a 23-member orchestra in the Society for Ethical\nCulture Concert Hall. In AB\, this classy player will play\nlike the tried and true quartet of old. \n Tiny Masters Of Today - Radio Riot \n Health - Crime Wave \n Handsome Furs - Can't Get Started \n Mono - Follow The Map
