SUMMARY:McCoy Tyner Trio feat. José James & Chris Potter
LOCATION:AB Theater (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:In 1963\, John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman's rather\nconventional and untitled album was released on the\nlegendary and adventurous jazz label Impulse (‘The House\nThat Trane Built’). It was an album full of exciting\nballads and was also the first and last collaboration to\never be recorded with Coltrane as bandleader together with a\nvocalist. In light of what Coltrane had released only a few\nyears prior (the famous ‘Giant Steps’ from that crucial\n(jazz) year ’59) or later on (‘A Love Supreme’ and\n‘Ascension’)\, this album was a notable interlude.\nColtrane's unctuous tenor sax and the exceptionally deep\nbaritone range of Johnny Hartman's vocals (or according\nto the liner notes “the dark satin lyricism of Hartman”)\nproduced an album full of classic interpretations of\nstandards like ‘Lush Life’\, ‘My One And Only Love’\nand ‘They Say It’s Wonderful’. For the 50 year\nanniversary of Impulse Records\, pianist McCoy Tyner\n(who's been recording for the label right from the\n'61 start) established a programme based upon the album\nby John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman on which he himself also\nplayed. What's more: Tyner is the only surviving member\nof this session that was recorded entirely with\nColtrane's classic quartet (the other members were Elvin\nJones and Jimmy Garrison). Tyner will be present with his\ntrio (containing Francisco Mela and Gerald Cannon) and\ndeliberately chose the company of Chris Potter (sax) and\nJosé James (who takes on the role of Johnny Hartman). José\nJames – now a regular guest in the AB – has been\nexploring and updating the rich jazz heritage for a while\nnow. Remember the project with which he visited the AB in\n’09\, together with Jef Neve: ‘Facing East: The Music Of\nJohn Coltrane’. What's more\, in ’12 José James\nwill be making a programme for AB that is to focus upon\nlegendary singer Billie Holiday. ‘They Say It’s\nWonderful’? No doubt about it Line up:McCoy Tyner: piano -\nFrancisco Mela: drums - Gerald Cannon: bass - Chris Potter:\nsax - José James: vocals Multimedia presentation Ashley\nKahn - 50 years of ImpulseAB is extremely proud to be one of\nthe very few European countries included in celebrating the\n50th Anniversary of legendary jazz label Impulse.
