SUMMARY:Master Musicians of Bukkake + Oneohtrix Point Never + Dolphi
ns into the Future
LOCATION:AB Club - staand (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:More than exquisite triple-bill for those who want a taste\nof and an immersion in ‘hypnagogic pop’ and ritualistic\npercussive jams… 8:00 pm - Dolphins into the\nFutureDolphins into the Future is the alter-ego of Lieven\nMartens who has a love for analogue audio mediums and also\nruns the cassette labels (yes indeed: they still exist!)\nTaped Sounds and Cetacean Nation. The former serves as a\nconduit for acts he's a fan of\, the latter is his\noutlet for his own work. Cetacean means ‘whale sorts’\,\nso it's no wonder that Martens incorporates a lot of\ndolphin sounds in his music or that one of his offshoot\nlabels is called ‘De Dolfijn Verdient een Pluim\nCassettes’. The new-age mood is never far removed. He also\nreleases on international labels like Sweden's Release\nThe Bats or America's Not Not Fun. The Wire even\ndedicated an entire page to his album ‘The Music Of\nBelief’ and referred to both The Orb\, Steve Hillage\n(Gong\, System 7) as well as Boards Of Canada and even used\nthe term Hypnagogic Pop. Really\, in our opinion\, De\nDolfijn Verdient een Pluim (The Dolphin Deserves a\nCompliment)! 9:00 pm - Oneohtrix Point Never\n(us)Oneohtrix Point Never is the solo-project of musician\nDaniel Lopatin from Brooklyn. AT the end of ’09 he\nsuddenly landed in leading magazine The Wire\, amongst the\nTop 3 best albums of ’09\, with his document of the times\n‘Rifts’ (via noise label No Fun): a compilation of his\nfirst three albums\, on which synthesizer experiments merge\nwith drones\, noise\, ambient and electronic krautrock. The\nWire even invented a new genre for it: ‘hypnagogic pop’\n(auditive tip: listen to the compilation ‘Hypnagogic Heat\nHaze’ put together by Boomkat) to which they also assign\nAriel Pink and Pocahaunted. Hypnagogic pop? According to The\nWire “music that reaches beyond its performers'\nabilities. It refashions 80s chart pop-rock into a hazy\,\npsychedelic drone. It is listening to Beverly Hills Cop and\nhearing the music of the spheres. It is the sound that\nremains after the boys of summer have gone". Oneohtrix\nPoint Never’s latest album ‘Returnal’ - beautifully\ndesigned by Stephen O’ Malley (Sunn O)))) - was released\nvia Viennese electronica label Editions Mego and received\nrave reviews. The news got to Antony Hegarty too and he will\nbe releasing an acoustic version of the title song later\nthis year (and a remix by labelmate Fennesz). Finally: if\nyou're struggling with his artist's name: Lopatin\nadvises you to simply say OPN “because it’s easy and has\nan NIN vibe to it.”10:15 pm - Master Musicians of Bukkake\n(us)According to their MySpace\, casual collective Master\nMusicians of Bukkake consists of ‘everyone and no one’.\nYet: those who dig a little deeper will notice that these\nMaster Musicians have become a consistent collective\ncontaining members from the likes of Earth\, Burning Witch\nand Grails. Their debut 'The Visible Sign of the\nInvisible Order' was released in ’04 on Abduction\nRecords\, label of the famous Sun City Girls. Their\nreputation has grown to new heights since the release of the\ntrilogy ‘Totem One’ (dedicated to those same Sun City\nGirls)\,‘Totem 2’ to ‘Totem 3’ that is to be\nreleased late this year. What connects the albums musically?\nDark soundscapes\, tribal rhythms\, ritually percussive\njams\, psychedelica and Eastern-influenced folk. Live\, it\nis just as compelling as it is alienating\, as the members\nof Master Musicians are always swathed in black robes …\nsomething else\, aside from drones\, that they have in\ncommon with soulmates Sunn O))). \n
