SUMMARY:Luc Van Acker
LOCATION:AB Box (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:◄◄ REWINDIn ‘07\, AB launched a timeless series:\n◄◄ REWIND. Central to this series are Belgian musicians\nwho perform ‘their classic’. Call it a milestone in\ntheir career or go a step further: a key record for popular\nBelgian music. Often\, but not always\, we're talking\nabout albums that are etched into collective memory.\nLet's just say: points of reference in the landscape of\nBelgian music. So each season a number of performers play\ntheir entire ‘pièce de résistance’. Entirely?\nThat's right\, in the exact order that they want to tell\ntheir story now or wanted to tell it at the time of its\nsuccess.With ◄◄ REWIND AB also contributes to the\nactivation of Belgium's musical heritage. Those who have\nalready passed in review: ‘Royalty In Exile’ (The\nScabs)\, ‘Gorky’ (by Gorki)\, ‘1981-1984’ (The Neon\nJudgement)\, ‘The Kids’ (The Kids)\, ‘Nooit Meer\nDrinken’ (Raymond Van Het Groenewoud)\, ‘Op Zoek Naar\nRomantiek’ (Guido Belcanto) and also ‘Jonge Helden’ by\nArbeid Adelt! The three Belgian classics pivotal to this new\nissue: De Mens who present their effervescent debut ‘De\nMens’ from ’92\, Luc Van Acker who picks up the thread\nof ‘The Ship’ from ’84\, and also Wim Mertens with his\nunder-appreciated album ‘Struggle For Pleasure’\n(’82).Just as previous performers\, they too will be\nhonoured with an official stone-laying ceremony in the\nSteenstraat next to AB: in recognition of their contribution\nto Belgian (pop) music. ◄◄ REWIND: Luc Van Acker\nplays ‘The Ship’ (1984)Luc Van Acker's ‘The\nShip’ is quite simply the chef d’oeuvre on the musical\nrésumé of Belgian pop's enfant terrible. ‘The\nShip’ was the successor to his ’81 debut ‘Taking\nSnapshots’\, an album without song titles and a blank back\ncover (listeners were presumed to invent their own song\ntitles). The period: electronica. Front 242 released their\nbreakthrough album ‘No Comment’ that same year and The\nNeon Judgement had just put ‘1981-1984’ on the\nmarket.‘The Ship’ – produced by Jean-Marie Aerts and\nwith Luc Van Acker in sailor suit on the cover - was above\nall an international sounding album. But then the line-up\nwas also impressive\, containing the likes of Anna Domino\,\nDave Allen (Shriekback)\, David Rhodes (Peter Gabriel)\, Ian\nCaple (later producer for Tricky) and Blaine L. Reininger\n(Tuxedomoon). There were no less than 3 singles taken from\nthe album: ‘Heart And Soul’\, ‘The Ship’ and also\nthe fabulous ‘Zanna’ (with a starring role for Anna\nDomino) - let's just say: Van Acker’s worldwide hit\nthat never was. ‘Zanna’ also adorns the ‘100 to 1’\,\nthe chart containing the 100 Best Belgian Songs according to\nRadio 1.‘The Ship’ even received a rave review – in\nthose days\, unheard of for a Belgian act – in\nEngland's Melody Maker. They wrote: “Luc Van\nAcker's eponymous album is a minor masterpiece”. Van\nAcker then went on to tour Europe following the album's\nrelease and played no less than 65 concerts. In ’04\,\nFocus Knack compiled a list of the most important Belpop\nalbums. ‘The Ship’ was included in it with the following\nwords of praise: “a feast of rhythm-‘n-grooves and\nchique songs.”To close\, more good news: Anna Domino\,\nJean-Marie Aerts\, Johannes Verschaeve (Van Jets) and David\nRhodes will be arriving especially for ◄◄ REWIND.◄◄\nREWIND: Q&AAfterwards\, now true to ◄◄ REWIND\ntradition\, Luc Van Acker will be interrogated in the AB\nClub by De Standaard journalist Wouter Van Driessche and Jan\nDelvaux (author of ’97 publication and reference work on\nBelgian pop music ‘Big In Belgium. Het Verhaal Van De\nBelgische Pop’). Delvaux is currently working on a sequel\n(working title: ‘Belpop. De eerste vijftig jaar.\n1960-2010’) that is to be released at the end of the\nyear.◄◄ REWIND FACTSLuc Van Acker is also a part of\ncurio-collection Arbeid Adelt! They played their entire\ndebut ‘Jonge Helden’ in ◄◄ REWIND in ’11 .‘The\nShip’ was produced by Jean-Marie Aerts (TC Matic). Aerts\nalso sat behind the dials for ‘Jonge Helden’ by Arbeid\nAdelt!The photography for ‘The Ship’ was by the famous\nDanny Willems. He was also responsible for the photography\nfor – again - ‘Jonge Helden’ but also for ‘Royalty\nIn Exile’ by The Scabs.\n\nhttps://www.abconcerts.be/en/agenda/luc-van-acker/a105J000001we0jQAA
