SUMMARY:Lou Reed's Metal Machine Trio
LOCATION:AB Flex (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:DOMINO: LOU REED'S METAL MACHINE TRIO: A NIGHT OF\nDEEP NOISE Lou Reed's Metal Machine Trio: MM3 will be\nperforming A NIGHT OF DEEP NOISE and features Lou Reed on\nprocessed and unprocessed guitars\, Ulrich Krieger on tenor\nsax and live-electronics\, and Sarth Calhoun on continuum\n& live processing. NO SONGS. “The greatest album ever\nmade” (Lester Bangs) One of the most controversial albums\nin music history was released in 1975: ‘Metal Machine\nMusic’ (with the strange subtitle ‘The Amine β Ring) by\nLou Reed. On this double album: four tracks (‘Metal\nMachine Music\, part I’ till ‘Metal Machine Music\, part\nIV’) consisting of pure noise\, distortion\, drones and\nfeedback that were each\, exactly\, 16 minutes and 1 second\nin length. All recorded on a 4-track in his apartment in New\nYork. It was also released just after his successful albums\n‘Transformer’ (’72)\, ‘Berlin’ (‘73) and\n‘Sally Can’t Dance’ (’74). Reed cited his influences\nas being the work of minimalist La Monte Young’s Theater\nof Eternal Music \, which included amongst its members the\nlikes of John Cale and Tony Conrad. Avant garde composers\nIannis Xenakis and Karlheinz Stockhausen were also\nmentioned. In the liner notes\, Lou Reed noted: “Most of\nyou won’t like this\, and I don’t blame you at all.”\nHe proved to be right too… Rolling Stone described the\nalbum as "the tubular groaning of a galactic\nrefrigerator" and as “as displeasing to experience as\na night in a bus terminal". ‘The Worst Rock\n'n' Roll Records Of All Time’ was released in\n'91\, in which Reed’s ‘MMM’ adorned the number two\nspot. Q placed the album at number 4 in their ‘Worst\nAlbums Of All Time’ chart in ’05. Even so: time always\ntells...And see: Lou Reed’s ‘Metal Machine Music’ has\nhad a revival in the past decade. As soundtrack for\ninstallations in museums\, as recognition by\nnoise-performers like Japanese noise-master Merzbow (his\nfirst cassette from ’81 was titled ‘Metal Acoustic\nMusic’) or Norwegian Jazkamer (who released a CD under the\ntitle ‘Metal Music Machine)’ or as a ‘piece of art’\nan sich (see: the performance of ‘MMM’ by German\nensemble Zeitkratzer). In the meantime\, there's quite a\nfan base: Sonic Youth used pieces of ‘MMM’ on their\nalbum ‘Bad Moon Rising’\, ‘Tranquilize’ by The\nKillers refers to ‘MMM’ and Lou Reed himself is once\nagain fan of his ‘piece of art’ that will be\n35-years-old in 2010. To mark the occasion\, he will be\ntouring with his Metal Machine Trio containing New Yorker\nSart Alhoun and German Ulrich Krieger (see: his\ncollaboration with Merzbow\, Lee Ranaldo\,…).In April\n’09 he performed his Metal Machine Trio in the Gramercy\nTheatre. Rolling Stone wrote of it: “Although the music\nwas played in the same spirit as the original album\, it had\nmuch more direction\, making it more listenable.” Things\ncan change. Live-tracks from a previous two-dayer\, where\nReed performed in LA with his trio\, can be heard (and\nbought) via: www.loureed.com/metalmachinetrio/ Just so you\ndon't get a complete shock on the night.Line up:LOU\nREED: processed and unprocessed guitarsULRICH KRIEGER: tenor\nsax & live electronicsSARTH ALHOUN: continuum & live\nprocessing With the support of and \n
