Kraftwerk – Trans-Europe Express\,\n1977\, Kling Klang Records\, 43 min. introduced by Koen\nGalle & Tristan Jong (DJ Kong / Gratts) The 6th album by\nthese electronica pioneers from Düsseldorf was yet another\nstep further removed from the Krautrock sound they helped to\nestablish in the early ’70's of last century. Since\nits release\, the album has influenced many generations of\nartists and bands and is still very highly ranked in many\ncharts and “best of”s.In 2009\, leading British webzine\nDrowned In Sound described the album as follows:\n"Trans-Europe Express is all at once antique\,\ntimeless\, retro and contemporary. Its status as modern\nelectronic music's birth certificate is well-earned\,\nbut its hallowed reputation should never be allowed to\ndisguise its true value and power as a work of art. Nor\nshould it obscure a longevity that\, 32 years on\, we might\nas well start calling by its real name: immortality".\nSo it's the ideal album to introduce a concert by those\nother electronica greats Orbital. Phil & Paul from\nOrbital don't hide the fact that Kraftwerk is one of\ntheir greatest influences either.The session will be\nintroduced in English by DJ duo Kong & Gratts\, (22\ntracks\, FM Brussel\, ….) and will last until\napproximately 7:15 pm.As an exception to the rule\, instead\nof listening to the the original vinyl album\, for this\nsession we'll be listening to the 2009 re-master CD\nversion from The Catalogue. This version is considered by\nKraftwerk themselves to be of superior quality to any former\nversions. By listening to\nstrongly compressed MP3s\, YouTube films\, or to sites like\nSpotify\, with small earphones or via laptop speakers we\nmiss out on essential elements of the music\, often without\nrealising it. Many albums were created as an artwork in\nthemselves and so deserve to be listened to in their\nentirety. A great deal of attention was often paid to\nobtaining the best possible sound quality\, the artwork\,\nthe order of the songs\, the mood of the songs and the\n‘story’ the artist wanted to involve the listener in. In\nmany cases\, no effort was spared to record the albums in\nthe best studios\, in order to make use of the best sounding\nmixing tables\, microphones\, pre-amps\, compressors\,\nreverbs\, etc... All of this is completely destroyed in a\nfew mouse-clicks.During the 33 1/3 sessions we will listen\nto an album in its entirety – without interruption and\nwith the best possible technical means – and in that way\nattempt to experience the album in the way originally\nintended when it was recorded\, mastered and released.
