SUMMARY:Julian Perretta
LOCATION:AB Box (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:Released about two years ago\, Julian Perretta's debut\nalbum 'Stitch me up'\, was the result of a long and\nsuccessful formative period initiated in his teens. The\nyoung English prodigy was already sharing the stage with\nMark Ronson or Beyoncé when his peers were still at school.\nThe twenty-something singer's first album proved\nimpressively mature and its irresistible first single Wonder\nwhy soon topped international charts and radio airplay.\nNeedless to say\, Perretta's appeal to female fans also\nrocketed skywards. A perfect calling card\, 'Stitch me\nup' deftly combined various influences\, personal (his\nfather\, a well-informed amateur musician\, fed him a diet\nof The Kinks\, Led Zeppelin and 70s soul music) and\ngenerational (English pop and American college-rock of the\n90s and 2000s). But what might have been a starting point\nfor others was for Julian a mere inventory of his first\nmusical obsessions. This debut album\, followed by some 200\nshows during a pan-European tour (culminating in a grand\nfinale at the Olympia in Paris)\, is now a thing of the\npast. While the music has not lost any of its passion and\nenergy\, it is nevertheless the product of a bygone era\, of\n20th-century recording studios\, compositional processes and\nsonic concepts. To quote one of his heroes - Marc Bolan\nof T. Rex - Julian is a " 21st-century Boy ". So\nit was time for him to consider the present and the future\ninstead of updating yesterday's music fashion. His\nsecond album\, 'The Game'\, is bound to surprise or\neven disconcert all those who expected another Wonder why or\na comfortable sequel to 'Stitch me up'. With its\naggressive electro sound and catchy anthemic chorus\,\n'Generation X'\, the first single\, sets the tone of\na determinedly futuristic album conceived as a manifesto for\nthe 2010s\, for his generation. In order to carry out his\nown personal revolution\, Julian Perretta embarked on a\nheadlong adventure that many would have thought totally\ninsane. He simply moved to Los Angeles\, although he did not\nknow anyone there. Trusting his extraordinary power of\nconviction\, he managed to gain the interest of today's\ntop producers and most sought-after composers and\nsongwriters. With Justin Timberlake's recent successful\ncareer change in mind\, plus the experience he had acquired\nthrough his first album\, Julian knew that he and the\nleading figures of the musical mainstream would be speaking\non the same wavelength. His master move was to hire\nJamaican-born Claude Kelly\, one of today's most\nprolific American songwriters. With him\, it became possible\nto play 'The Game'. Kelly\, who has written numerous\nhits for the likes of Michael Jackson\, Christina Aguilera\,\nAkon or Britney Spears\, immediately caught Julian's\nintentions and wrote custom-made songs with sophisticated\nmelodies and heartfelt lyrics. His collaboration with\naward-winning songwriter Cathy Dennis ('Toxic' for\nBritney or 'Can't get you out of my head' for\nKylie Minogue\, a.o.) provided Julian with a solid base for\nan urban\, sensual\, superior style of writing that\nperfectly matched the young artist's wish to combine the\nbest of pop with the energy of dance music and the art of\nhip-hop. This explosive alchemy acts like burning kerosene\non titles such as Naked\, Buzzed with you or Best friend.\nThat was exactly what Julian Perretta needed to move on and\nreach other spheres\, perhaps less comfortable but so much\nmore exciting. Master mixer Manny Marroquin (Kanye West\,\nUsher\, Alicia Keys)\, added the finishing touch to the\nalbum. Yet\, for all this stellar cast around him\, Julian\nhad everything perfectly under control and realized the\nalbum of his dreams. The songs on the first album were those\nof a 16-yr old - full of feeling but lacking in vivo\nexperience. The new titles echo the storms and joys of adult\nlife and of going beyond limits. They speak of the ambiguity\nof human relationships in an ultra-connected world that can\nprove devastating at times. Perretta does not beat around\nthe bush when dealing with toxic love relationships\n('I'm in love'\, 'Acid')\, or hopeless\nsex addictions (Naked) and various temptations one sometimes\nyields to without resistance\, just for the taste of danger\nand the fun of a short-lived thrill. More poker than\nbadminton\, The Game is an album with a sense of urgency and\nexhilaration. Yet it has its moments of bliss: listen to We\ndon't need a love song\, a sparkling title bathed in\nsoul\, or Accomplice\, Julian's homage to the retro\nsound of the 80s in England\, with the likes of Duran Duran\nor the Pet Shop Boys. Julian wanted a cover to match the\nspirit of 'The Game'\, between games of seduction\nand dangerous games\, so he hired English graphic wiz Jam\nSutton to design the album cover. Inspired by Pop Art and\nSurrealism\, the artist's work is as stunning and\ninnovative as the album itself. Get ready for the game - and\nthe party.
