DESCRIPTION:Following on from last year's long sold-out ABClub\nconcert\, now finally back in the ABFlex with a new CD: the\ncompelling singer-songwriter\, now with his\nlive-painter's easel too (see below). In the meantime\,\nthis piece from De Standaard should amply suffice:'For\nan hour and a half\, in the ABClub\, we imagined ourselves\nto be in Joseph Arthur's head. A head full of melancholy\nmusings and magnificent songs. An evening with Joseph Arthur\nwon't cheer you up. The American singer-songwriter\npresents primarily sombre songs drenched in melancholy and\nthe pain of living\, with only every now and then a whiff of\noptimism. Moreover\, in contrast to e.g. Jim White (who\ncounters his heavy music with jokes)\, Arthur is\nintroverted. At the end of the show\, someone in the\naudience countered his own question: how are things with\nyou? ‘I don't really know'\, answered Arthur.\n‘Good\, I think.' Arthur is a prolific writer. For\nthat reason he has sometimes made EPs and albums that\nweren't that convincing. But for his shows Arthur can\nrummage endlessly in a stack of impressive songs. Arthur\nappeared\, without his Lonely Astronauts\, lonely and alone\nin the AB Club and so made magic with a loop-pedal. He\nkicked off on acoustic guitar with ‘Vacancy'. Later\nexchanging it for an electric version. Arthur sometimes\nlayered two or three guitars on top of each other in order\nto let a song fan out. In doing so he always remained on the\nright side of the border between emotional and boring. In\nthe first half of the performance\, especially ‘Here comes\nthe sun' and ‘Honey and the moon' made quite an\nimpression. Arthur is a favourite of the stars. Michael\nStipe called ‘In the sun' the best song ever written\,\nPeter Gabriel offered him a record deal\, and he toured with\nBen Harper. Arthur's music is also the ideal soundtrack\nfor television series like Dawson's Creek\, The O.C.\,\nGrey's Anatomy: all of which played one of Arthur's\nsongs during an emotional scene. Only the general public is\nlagging behind. Arthur is like the small masterpiece that\nnobody notices in the corner of the museum. Everyone was\ndreaming away in the AB Club\, which for that matter was\nsold out. The rare drunkard who tried to introduce some\natmosphere by clapping along to the music was reprimanded by\nArthur himself: ‘Don't do that.'Arthur\, mostly\nbathing in a blue or red light\, presented ‘In the\nsun' in an entirely unique version. That is not usually\nappreciated by an audience but\, due to its lyrical power\nand Arthur's authenticity\, the song firmly remained\nstanding. We went home from a magnificent performance\,\nsatisfied but a little despondent.'
