SUMMARY:Jóhann Jóhannsson + Fennesz + Jon Hopkins
LOCATION:AB Flex (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:9:00 pm JÓHANN JÓHANNSSON"Just as Sigur Rós\,\nJóhann Jóhannsson exploits the area between pop and\nclassical\, emotional depth wins over technical ability and\nmusic finishes before language. Jóhannsson has delivered a\ntrue masterpiece with ‘Fordlândia’ ." (De\nMorgen)Jóhann Jóhannsson is known as composer for theatre\nand film\, musician with APPARAT ORGAN QUARTET (with his\npredilection for dilapidated organs) and the darker\nelectronica project EVIL MADNESS (with the likes of\nCurver)\, and also as co-founder of the Icelandic think-tank\nKitchen Motors (see too: Kira Kira and Hilmar Jensson). On\nhis track record you can find a series of film scores and\nnow 5 solo-albums\, the most recent of which being\n‘Fordlândia’. This record deals with the failed dream\nof Henry Ford who\, in the 20's of the previous\ncentury\, tried to establish a new country in the Amazon.\nJóhannsson's combination of strings\, piano\,\nelectronica and percussion is rarely equaled. His slowly\nconstructed\, emotional melodies leave few unmoved. Silent\nsplendour? Oh yes! Something more – and we quote –\n"Although his music is rarely\, if ever\, played on the\nradio\, Iceland's Jóhann Jóhannsson has succeeded in\nwinning a large audience with little media\nattention."\, according to De Morgen. Basically: be\nthere on time!8:00 pm FENNESZ"There's a warmth in\nFennesz's work\, an emotional integrity." (David\nSylvian)They're rare: laptop-performers that surpass\ntheir own\, often extremely hermetic\, world. The likes of\nMatmos can claim to have achieved this (their collaboration\nwith Björk)\, Jim O' Rourke (his production work for\nWilco or Joanna Newsom and his collaboration with Sonic\nYouth)\, Alva Noto (his collaboration with Ryuichi\nSakamoto)\, Jon Hopkins (see: above) and also the extremely\ntalented Christian Fennesz from Austria. Fennesz has already\nworked in the past with Mark ‘Sparklehorse’ Linkous\n(from which an album is to be released shortly)\, Ryuichi\nSakamoto\, David Sylvian and Mike Patton. Fennesz calls his\nmasterpiece 'Endless Summer' his personal reflection\non The Beach Boys\, a group that he counts as one of his\ngreat influences. Humo wrote of it: "Glitch-pop has\nnever sounded more lyrical\, timeless and accessible".\nHis electronic sound variegations are also full of warm\nnoise and emotional subtlety. The album 'Venice'\n(from ’04) also contains a brilliant highlight thanks to\nDavid Sylvian's vocal collaboration. Last year the\nactual successor to 'Venice' was finally released\,\n‘Black Sea’\, still on the ever qualitative Touch label\nand as always Fennesz deals in beautifully purified\nelectronica. He also presented at his best at the latest\nedition of All Tomorrow’s Parties. 7:00 pm JON\nHOPKINSJon Hopkins - barely 28 springs old - at first\nappears to be a noble unknown\, but in fact possesses a\n(very) impressive track record. He's worked together\nwith the likes of Brian Eno\, Coldplay (with whom he has\nalso toured America and acted as co-producer on their latest\nalbum ‘Viva La Vida’)\, Herbie Hancock and Massive\nAttack. He's already made his mark with the impressive\ntrack ‘Vessel’\, available for months now via his\nMySpace page. A perfect mix of electronica\, classical\n(Hopkins is also a classically trained pianist) and\ndistorted sounds from the Aphex-school. A mix that can also\nto be heard on his third album ‘Insides’\, due to be\nreleased in spring (but already available on iTunes)\, a\nstunningly beautiful album that already now adorns our\nend-of-year charts. No wonder then that well-respected\nchoreographer Wayne McGregor has\, musically\, largely\ngraced his latest dance production ‘Entity’ with\nHopkins’ ‘Insides’. Indeed: Domino immediately opens\nin style\, with a formidable discovery. 7:00 pm\nSOUNDTRACK BY… JOHN TWELLS (Type Records) 7:00 pm\nPRE-LISTENING SESSION: SOAP & SKIN ‘Lovetune For\nVacuum’ (Couch Records/[Pias Recordings – release: mi\navril) Jon Hopkins Visuals\n(Excerpt) Jóhann Jóhannsson\n- The Rocket Builder Fennesz\n- Shisheido\n\nhttps://www.abconcerts.be/en/agenda/johann-johannsson-fennesz-jon-hopkins/a105J000001wgYhQAI
