SUMMARY:Imany + Sarah Ferri + Awesome Tapes From Africa
LOCATION:AB Salon - zittend (Steenstraat 11\, 1000 Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm SOUNDTRACK BY: Awesome Tapes From Africa (US)Behind\nAwesome Tapes From Africa you'll find Brooklyn\ninhabitant and music-ethnologist Brian Shimkovitz. His\nout-of-hand hobby: collecting (often rare) cassettes of\nAfrican music. He then digitalises them to share with the\nworld on his immensely popular blog Awesome Tapes From\nAfrica. Lately\, Shimkovitz also heads out on the road\nbearing laptop and cassettes to share the music he loves\nwith even more people. We saw him at work last year at All\nTomorrow’s Parties\, where he made quite an impression.\nAlors on danse! 8:30 pm Sarah Ferri (BE)Alongside Drums Are\nFor Parades and Jan Swerts\, singer songwriter Sarah Ferri\nis one of the three Artist In Residence that AB has taken\nunder its wing this year. AB fell first for her impressive\nand versatile voice. Ferri easily surfs from demure songs to\ngipsy\, jazz\, swing or bossa nova. You could call it a\nreflection of the composition of her blood: the contrast\nbetween the ‘Mysterious North’ (Belgian mother) and the\n‘Fiery South’ (Italian father). Radio 1 fell for her\ntoo: "Unmistakable talent. What a voice! Without\npretence and with heaps of natural charm. Timeless class is\nwhat we call that.” DJ/producer Sven Van Hees himself even\ndrew an international comparison: "Strongly reminds me\nof vocalists in the style of Ane Brun\, Emiliana Torrini and\nJoni Mitchell.” Too right!9:45 pm Imany (FR)They remind\none of both Tracy Chapman and Billie Holiday. Yet she still\nhas her own personality and heavenly voice. Put yourself in\nher shoes: She opened impressively for Ben L’Oncle Soul in\nAB. She played at prestigious festival Jazz Montreux\, sold\nout the famous Parisian jazz club New Morning and is soon to\nappear in La Cigale. What's more: in France her debut\n‘The Shape Of A Broken Heart’ adorns the Top 3 in the\niTunes charts\, in the good company of Adele and Ben Harper.\nImany lived and worked in New York as model for a while but\nwas born and bred in France. That's also where she\nrecorded her debut with renowned musicians and performers\nlike Biolay\, Keziah Jones and Souad Massi. She cites\ninfluences like the previously mentioned Tracy Chapman and\nBillie Holiday as well as Sade\, Etta James\, Indie.Arie\,\nBob Marley\, Nina Simone and Carmen Mcrae too. Hats off to\nher. Sarah Ferri plays\n"On my own" AB Session from ancienne belgique on\nVimeo.
