DESCRIPTION:◄◄ REWINDIn ‘07\, AB enthusiastically launched a\ntimeless series: ◄◄ REWIND. Central to this series are\nBelgian musicians who perform ‘their classic’ in its\nentirety. Simply call it a milestone in their career or go a\nlittle further: a key record for Belgian pop music. Often\,\nbut not always\, we’re talking about albums that are\netched into collective memory. Just call them anchor points\nin the landscape of Belgian music. So each season a number\nof performers play their complete ‘pièce de\nrésistance’. Completely? That’s right\, in the exact\norder that they want to tell their story now or wanted to\ntell it at the time of its success.With ◄◄ REWIND AB\nalso contributes to the activation of Belgium's musical\nheritage. Those who have already passed in review:\n‘Royalty In Exile’ (The Scabs)\, ‘Gorky’ (by\nGorki)\, ‘1981-1984’ (The Neon Judgement)\, ‘The\nKids’ (The Kids) and also ‘Nooit Meer Drinken’\n(Raymond Van Het Groenewoud).During this 2010 edition it is\nthe turn of GUIDO BELCANTO with his debut and tear-jerking\nclassic ‘Op Zoek Naar Romantiek’ (from ’89) and also\nthe absurd Dutch-language ‘Jonge Helden’ (from ’83) by\nARBEID ADELT\, especially reunited for the occasion! ◄◄\nREWIND: Guido Belcanto plays 'Op zoek naar\nRomantiek' (1989)Guido Belcanto (born Guy Versmissen) is\nquite simply a formidable crooner. Belcanto was the\nperformer to take the singing of sentimental songs to a\nhigher level in Flanders. Or as radio-maker Gust De Coster\nsuggested in ‘Wit-lof from Belgium’: “Hij voorzag de\ncharmezang van een nieuwe dimensie”. So it's not\nwithout reason that Belcanto is hailed as the ‘King of\nFlemish Song Sentiment’. In the seventies he played in\nballroom orchestras\, was a busker and variety-performer. In\n‘78 he participated in the final of Humo’s Rock Rally\nwith his band Speedy King and his Feetwarmers. He became\nbetter known with his band The Gigolo’s\, with which he\nplayed 50's rock ’n roll. In ’89 he debuted under\nthe pseudonym Guido Belcanto with ‘Op zoek naar\nromantiek’. Belcanto has already released ten albums\,\nincluding ‘Plastic Rozen Verwelken Niet’ (from 1990)\nwhich is also generally considered a classic. His latest\ntour – ‘Balzaal der Gebroken Harten’ (with a Decap\norgan) was certainly one of his most successful tours of\nFlanders. In ‘06 he even wrote two books: ‘Man van\nlichte zeden’ and ‘Koning en clochard’. 'Op zoek\nnaar Romantiek' was Belcanto’s debut (produced by Jean\nBlaute) from ’89. His first single ‘Droevig is deze\nwereld’ and afterwards ‘Op het zeildoek van de\nbotsauto’s’ set a new standard for sentimental songs.\nBelcanto song what he wanted to say. He called a spade a\nspade or just described things as they were. What do you\nthink of: “Iets warm en zacht glijdt uit mijn lichaam de\nwc-pot in” (“something warm and soft glides out of my\nbody and into the toilet”) from the title song of the same\nname. Or “ik stond op en ging pissen in de lavabo” (“I\nstood up and took a piss in the sink”) from ‘Vannacht\ndroomde ik dat ik beroemd was’. ‘Op zoek naar’…\ncontains countless evergreens\, like title song\, ‘Op Het\nZeildoek van de Botsauto’s’\, ‘De Vrouw van de\nBakker’ and ‘Je betekent Niets als Niemand om je\ngeeft’. Loved by the common people but – remarkably –\nalso by rockers. Gust De Coster thinks the reason for this\nis that “Belcanto verpakte zijn melancholische ironie\nmeesterlijk”. However\, Belcanto has always been a\nstranger to his audience. “Te hip voor de goegemeente\, te\nkitscherig voor de intello’s.” according to De Coster.\nBelcanto himself certainly finds it an ‘infinite honour’\nto appear in the ◄◄ REWIND series. “Ik zie het als een\nwelverdiende beloning voor mijn niet aflatende inspanningen\nom het Vlaamse lied een nieuwe dimensie te geven en op een\nhoger niveau te plaatsen. Eindelijk ook een officiële\nwaardering voor een artiest die niet meedraait in het\ncommerciële en artificiële circus van hitparades en\nawards.” On his own website\, Belcanto decrees as follows:\n“Ik beschouw deze gebeurtenis als een soort FANDAG. Ik doe\ndit optreden in de eerste plaats om jullie te bedanken voor\n25 jaar liefde. Dus\, wees massaal op post\, in feestkledij\nen goed humeur: het is UW feest.” It has been noted.\nAfterwards\, as ◄◄ REWIND tradition now dictates\, GUIDO\nBELCANTO will be interrogated by Jan Delvaux (author of\n‘Big In Belgium. Het Verhaal Van De Belgische Pop’) and\nWouter Van Driessche.
