SUMMARY:Facing East : The Music of John Coltrane by José James & Je
f Neve
LOCATION:AB Flex (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:[Answering a question about who his influences were]\n"Coltrane rewrote the alphabet of jazz\, so that's\nan example in itself. I've even written lyrics for his\ncompositions\, but the people who manage his legacy\napparently found that sacrilege. A huge disappointment\, as\nmy version of 'Equinox' was to primarily serve as\nthe basis around which the rest of the record would be\nconstructed. I see it especially as a missed opportunity to\nintroduce a new\, younger audience to his music."\n(José James in De Morgen)Or: how a simple quote in a\nnewspaper can lead to an international AB-production…\nStop! Rewind! Back to November ’08. That was when the\nbarely 30-year-old José James appeared on the AB-stage\ntogether with pianist Jef Neve and provided a set bursting\nwith improvisation and playing pleasure. Immediately one of\nthe musical highlights of '08! De Morgen – with a rare\n*****-review – wrote of it: "staggering concert …\nmagic … dazzling". And also: "James broke some\nsacred jazz rules by scatting to the work of the legendary\nJohn Coltrane". More than enough reasons to speak to\nJosé James after the show and invite him to participate in\na project at the AB\, with as goal: to realise his dream. Or\nrather\, to put lyrics to the music of John Coltrane and\nagain with the assistance of none less than Jef Neve. ‘I\nwould love to!’ was his answer. And see: this will now\ntake place on Wednesday 23 September\, birthday of the\ndeceased John Coltrane. If you want to know what the result\nmight sound like: be sure to check out James’ MySpace\nwhere you can hear\, and be convinced by\, the track\n‘Equinox’ (from Coltrane in ’60\, from the album\n‘Coltrane’s Sound’) - once released as a promo-only\ncopy on 10".Stop! Rewind! José James? This singing\nBrooklyn resident debuted last year with ‘The Dreamer’ -\na contemporary mix of jazz\, blues and soul – which\nimmediately impressed. To quote Humo "this cast-iron\ndebut makes quite an impression." Or De Standaard:\n"Aside from being a sublime interpreter\, José James\nis also a gifted writer and composer." Barely thirty\nand already bombarded to the position of jazz' great new\nhope. He quotes his greatest influences as being Billie\nHoliday and John Coltrane. But vocally he sounds like Gil\nScott-Heron or Terry Callier. His goal? To make jazz for the\nhip-hop generation. It's not without reason that he\nreworked the likes of hip-hop song ‘Park Bench Life’\nfrom the late Freestyle Fellowship. His candour is a virtue.\nHe's already worked together with Warp-artist Flying\nLotus (whose cousin was none less than the late Alice - wife\nof - Coltrane) and also Jazzanova. His new album will be\nreleased at the end of this year. Line up: José\nJames: vocalsJef Neve: pianoMichael Campagne: tenor\nsaxNeville Malcolm: bassRichard Spaven: drums Stop!\nRewind! John Coltrane?Without a doubt one of the most\ninfluential musicians of modern jazz\, both technically and\nspiritually. ‘Trane’s legacy under his own name covers a\nmere 10 years (from ’57 until his death in ’67) but can\ncertainly be considered awesome. From his first solo records\nvia Prestige to his famous ‘Blue Train’ (Blue Note) and\nhis most famous albums on Atlantic (all to be found in the 7\nCD box ‘The Heavyweight Champion') including ‘Giant\nSteps’ (the first Coltrane record consisting completely of\nown compositions) and also ‘My Favorite Things’ (with\nthat immortal interpretation of the ‘Sound Of Music’\nclassic of the same name). In ’61 he was the first artist\nto sign to Impulse! where he made the most recordings with\nhis classic quartet containing – aside from Coltrane\nhimself\, of course - McCoy Tyner (piano)\, Elvin Jones\n(drums) and contrabassist Jimmy Garrison. Impulse!\nmilestones were indisputably ‘A Love Supreme’ (‘a\nspiritual suite’) and also ‘Ascension’ (Coltrane’s\nanswer to ‘Free Jazz’ by Ornette Coleman). \n Seenematic VJ demo José James from\nkrewcial on Vimeo.
