SUMMARY:DVD Screening: 'The Outer Edges' by Karl Hyde and Kieran Eva
ns
LOCATION:AB Salon - zittend (Steenstraat 11\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:Karl Hyde (Underworld) and Kieran Evans (Finisterre\, Kelly\n+ Victor)\, 70 min\, UK. Introduction by Karl Hyde. \n A seventy-minute film that tracks a peripheral route\nfrom north Essex to the Thames\, The Outer Edges documents a\njourney that follows the flow of the River Roding from its\nsource to its conclusion at Barking Creek and along the\nThames Gateway to Tilbury. Stopping off variously at\nallotments\, boxing clubs\, Saturday markets and working\nmen’s clubs\, the film celebrates the vibrant energy and\nattitudes of the people living and working within London’s\ninvisible borders – the unmapped boundaries that Hyde\ncrossed each day to record Edgeland\, his first solo album. \n Says Hyde: “The film is an extension of the\njourney that Edgeland takes\, one inspired by the positive\nvibes spread by the Olympic volunteers. And it’s about\nremembering what it was like when Rick and I first moved to\nRomford - the welcome we received\, the feeling of belonging\nto a tribe that was always positive no matter what the\npolitical\, economic or natural climate; a tribe that always\nhad an answer to every problem. The search for that energy\nled us to the zone where the city crumbles into fields.\nIt’s a place that's too often forgotten\, one that\nrarely makes the news and never appears in travel brochures.\nYet it’s somewhere that important history was made and\nwhere a rich and vibrant spirit is still alive. I felt it\nwas time to remind myself of it.” Drawing on the\ninfluences of inspirational psychogeographic films such as\nPatrick Keiller’s Robinson In Space and Andrew Kotting’s\nGallivant\, The Outer Edges is built around a series of\nstunning visual snapshots that explore the stories and\nreminiscences of real-life characters met along the journey.\nCut to a soundtrack made up of Hyde’s tracks reworked\nspecifically for the film\, The Outer Edges offers a\nfascinating insight into lives lived along the edges of\nLondon. Kieran Evans is a filmmaker who works in\nboth documentary and narrative genres. His acclaimed debut\nfeature Kelly + Victor - adapted from the novel by Niall\nGriffiths - is due for theatrical release later this year\nafter receiving its premiere last autumn at the 2012 London\nFilm Festival. It received its US premiere at the SXSW Film\nFestival only this week. Kieran's previous work\nincludes the iconic London film Finisterre\, which he\nco-directed with Paul Kelly (and due for re-release by the\nBFI this summer to celebrate its tenth anniversary). He has\npreviously made films with artists such Vashti Bunyan (From\nHere to Before) & Manic Street Preachers (Culture\,\nAlienation\, Boredom and Despair). Of the film\,\nEvans says: “The Outer Edges began and ended with a\nseries of long walks coursing river routes and motorway\nlanes along the edge of London yet stuck to a path that\nalways kept the city at arms length. On each of these\njourneys\, we saw extraordinary spaces in a state of flux\nand change that felt like a world away from the city on the\nhorizon. The people we met along the way seemed to frame the\nplaces we passed through and gave it a character all of its\nown. With that in mind\, The Outer Edges is a film not about\na set geographical route\, it's more about the people\nwho showed us the way.” The screening is only\naccessible to those attending the Karl Hyde concert later\nthis evening. Admittance is free of charge but you are\nrequired to register: send an email - making mention of your\nticket-number - to reservationshuis23@abconcerts.be with\n‘Edges’ as the subject.
