SUMMARY:Ducktails + Julian Lynch + Big Troubles + Kraak DJ's
LOCATION:AB Club - staand (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:Exquisite triple bill with performers linked to the hot\nBrooklyn label Olde English Spelling B run by Todd Ledford.\nMany of the Olde English… releases are tagged\n‘hypnagogic pop’. Ledford on that: “indeed\, a lot of\nexperimental artists started embracing this 80's pop\naesthetic and incorporating it into their work”. That is\nnot only the case for label owners like James Ferraro\,\nStellar Om Source\, Autre Ne Veut and Rangers but also for\nDucktails\, Julian Lynch and Big Troubles. Before\, between\nand after: The turntables will be manned by the gents from\nGhent's KRAAK.8:00 pm - Big Troubles (us)New\nJersey's Big Troubles recently debuted with\n‘Worry’\, a song that immediately threw us back to the\nearly nineties at the time of ‘Loveless’ by My Bloody\nValentine. Just call it noisy shoegaze\, even though Big\nTroubles pays more attention to mainstream songs. Leading\nmag Boomkat about that: “There's an overwhelmingly\nfizzy\, treble-some recording style here which imbues the\nwhole thing with a hazy\, nostalgic quality that reminds us\nof everything from My Bloody Valentine to The Jesus and Mary\nChain to Dinosaur Jr at their very peak - making for one of\nthe standout lo-fi pop record of the year bar none.”9:00\npm - Julian Lynch (us)Another New Jersey resident\, Julian\nLynch debuted with his (first non-CDR) album ‘Orange You\nGlad’ on Olde English...\, an album full of ‘folky\ncollage pop’. His latest album ‘Mare’ immediately\nreceived an exceptional 8.5 score from the prominent\nPitchfork mag. Just call it the ‘Best New Music’\ncategory in which other fine folk like Nicolas Jaar or PJ\nHarvey have housed over the past months (rightly so too).\nYou can hear echoes of drones\, noise\, and African\npercussion aside traditional pop and rock on ‘Mare’ but\nmost especially a strong dose of country and folk. The\nlatter is unsurprising though\, as Lynch once worked for\nSmithsonian Folkways Recordings and also studies\nmusic-ethnology.10:00 pm - Ducktails (us)Ducktails is the\npsychedelic one-man (pop) project of guitarist Matthew\nMondanile (see too: Real Estate). His latest album\n‘Ducktails III: Arcade Dynamics’ immediately became\nalbum of the week in the London's Rough Trade shop and\nwas also labelled with the term hypnagogic pop. This New\nJersey resident opts for the lo-fi approach too\, interlaced\nwith a dash of folk\, country and surf-pop.
