SUMMARY:Daniel Johnston and The Beam Orchestra
LOCATION:AB Box (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:DOMINO: DANIEL JOHNSTON AND THE BEAM ORCHESTRA: ‘Beam Me\nUp Daniel’ + SCREENING OF ‘The Devil And Daniel\nJohnston’ + ART EXHIBITION + TOMMIGUN A THOROUGH ART\,\nMOVIE AND LIVE EXPERIENCE ABOUT AND WITH DANIEL\nJOHNSTONYup\, this ‘Beam Me Up Daniel’ is quite simply a\ntotal-evening annex total-experience. The perfect\nintroduction for the Daniel Johnston-layperson and a feast\nfor the Johnston-initiates amongst us. With performances\, a\ndocumentary and an expo. All focused upon this eccentric\ncharacter. “Daniel Johnston reminds me of aspects that\nmade me love art in the first place”. (David Bowie)“The\ngreatest songwriter on earth.” (Kurt Cobain) Daniel\nJohnston (now almost 50) has already been active for more\nthan a quarter century now but it's as if the world has\nonly opened its eyes to this genius in the last few years.\nFirst turning point: the tribute album ‘The Late Great\nDaniel Johnston’\, released in '04\, on which the\nlikes of Tom Waits\, Beck\, Death Cab For Cutie\, TV On The\nRadio and Eels covered his songs. Another popular turning\npoint: ‘The Devil And Daniel Johnston’\, from ’05\, a\ncompelling portrait of this manic-depressive musician and a\nDVD that has now been screened worldwide at diverse\nprestigious film festivals. His music is slowly being\nrediscovered\, his following grows (see too: the sold out\nABBox in ’07) and his playful drawings (that often adorn\nhis album covers) are even displayed/sold in expensive\ngalleries. It's not without reason that Bowie invited\nJohnston to the Highline Festival in NYC that he put\ntogether a few years ago. Johnston’s reputation began with\na series of homemade lo-fi-cassettes that he began\ndistributing among friends and fans in the early 80's.\nThe Butthole Surfers and members of Sonic Youth were\nimmediate fans. His first and also greatest exposure came\nwhen Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) wore a T-shirt portraying Mister\nDaniel during the MTV Music Awards in ’92.Johnston’s\nsongs are often about unrequited loves\, existential themes\nor simply about The Beatles. Johnston: "When I was 19\,\nI wanted to be The Beatles. I was disappointed when I found\nout I couldn't sing.". Humo wrote of him: “Lets\nbe clear about one thing: Daniel Johnston (wavering\, high\,\nfalset voice) can't sing … and yet: he writes and\nmakes fantastic music.”. His latest release is called\n'Is and Always Was' and is – according to Humo -\n“his very best album.”Musical Johnston-tips: surf to\nwww.hihowareyou.com and learn everything there is to know\nabout Johnston. Buy the book ‘The Life\, Art & Music\nof Daniel Johnston’ (by T. Yazdani & D. Goede\, ‘06)\nand the CD ‘Welcome To My World\, The Music Of Daniel\nJohnston’ (and also a heap of artwork while you're at\nit\, but keep an eye on your wallet with this last tip as\nhis artwork can cost you as much as $1500).Beam\nOrchestraEleven-member\, contemporary Dutch ensemble. Will\nserve as backing band to Johnston on the night but will also\npresent instrumental versions of Johnston's songs. We\nsaw their try-out earlier this year in Willem II (Den\nBosch\, NL)... and we approved.SCREENING: ‘THE DEVIL AND\nDANIEL JOHNSTON’(’05 – 110 min. - director: Jeff\nFeuerzeig)The perfect introduction for Johnston-laypersons.\nHailed as the DVD of that year by Sufjan Stevens in ’06.\nUncut wrote of it: ‘****’. This documentary has already\nbeen screened at many film festivals worldwide and has also\nbagged countless awards (including ‘Best Director’ at\nthe Sundance Festival\, ‘Audience Award’ at the San\nFrancisco Independent Film Festival\,…).ART EXHIBITIONFor\nyears\, Johnston’s artwork has adorned the man's\nalbums. But now it also tours with him to complete the\ntotal-experience. You can expect a selection of drawings of\nhis characters\, like Casper The Friendly Ghost\, Jeremiah\nThe Innocent (better known as the Hi\, How Are You? Frog) or\nCaptain America. In recent years\, his work has hung in\nvarious galleries all over the world too (including the\nlikes of the Aquarium Gallery in London\, Clementine Gallery\nin New York\,…)Tommigun is the new project from Thomas\nDevos (Rumplestitchkin) and Joeri Cnapelinckx (Kawada).\nMusical friends are the likes of The Black Heart Procession\nand Scout Niblett. Which is not accidental. Tommigun makes\nmusic that is desolate one minute\, but at the same time\nfragilely beautiful\, and raw but reserved the next. Or as\nthey say themselves: ‘heartbreak-hangover tunes\,\nexplosive bursts of anger’. The recordings for their first\nfull-album took place in San Diego with musicians from the\nCalifornian indie-rock scene and with Pall Jenkins (Black\nHeart Procession) as producer. The album's release is\nplanned for early 2010! Now touring Europe with Mister\nJohnston. With the support of and \n
