SUMMARY:Carolina Chocolate Drops + Ryan Bingham & The Dead Horses
LOCATION:AB Box (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:9:30 pm - CAROLINA CHOCOLATE DROPS Early American Music!\nRoots! 'Afro-American String band'! 'Heritage!\nGenuine Negro Jig'! Those last two cries are also the\ntitles of their two brilliant CDs. Carolina Chocolate Drops\nis a black North American threesome that you should already\nknow from their extremely original single 'Hit 'Em\nUp Style'. Behind the band name you will find Dom\nFlemons (mostly guitar)\, Rhiannon Giddens (mostly banjo)\,\nand Justin Robinson (mostly fiddle.) But the trio exchange\ninstruments at the drop of a hat or throw in some vigorous\nvocals or perfect percussion (if need be with\n'bones' or a 'computer hard drive\ntriangle'.)Energetic and educational! Even the packaging\nappears authentic: with clothes 'from before the\nwar' but\, especially\, always with plenty of\nexplanation about the songs that they serve and take on.\nAlan Lomax would certainly have been extremely appreciative\nof Carolina Chocolate Drops. But the same can be said of the\naudience at Dranouter this summer! Genuine Negro Jig is out\non the Nonesuch label (via Warner) and was produced by Joe\nHenry! De Standaard reported at the time: '3/4...\neerlijk als goud... klasse.' Les inrocks too: 'Retro\nmais pas trop'. Top roots! 8:00 pm - RYAN BINGHAM\n& THE DEAD HORSES Tight\, top-shelf\, Americana\ncountry-rock ! 'Junky Star' will already be Ryan\nBingham's third CD - on the Lost Highway label via\nUniversal - and was produced by the ever spot-on T Bone\nBurnett. Cinephile music lovers know Ryan Bingham from\n'The Weary Kind'\, which was another (milder) T Bone\nBurnett production and an Oscar winner from the soundtrack\nto Crazy Heart (yep\, that consummate 'country film'\nwith Jeff Bridges!).So from now on it's really Ryan\nBingham & The Dead Horses. Another interesting detail\ntoo: apparently Ryan once had a career as rodeo-rider!?\nBritain's Uncut already wrote of 'Junky Star':\n'...songs that veer from rainy-day Dylan to Steve Earle\nand the border-town blues of Terry Allen.' To throw in\nthat other Q magazine at the same time too: 'With the\nworn\, leathery tones and skewed romanticism of an ageing\ndrifter who's seen only hard times\, he's anything\nbut starry-eyed on this dour collection of no-frills\nAmericana'. So it is too! So if neither The Felice\, nor\nThe Avett Brothers make it here to see us then we'll be\njust as highly honoured with the husky songs of Ryan Bingham\nand his Dead Horses! Watch te video here. 7:15 - pm\nLIAM GERNER \n\nhttps://www.abconcerts.be/en/agenda/carolina-chocolate-drops-ryan-bingham-the-dead-horses/a105J000001wgg9QAA
