DESCRIPTION:They've both appeared on the AB stage in the recent\npast: masterful pianist Brad Mehldau (as ever\, with his\ntrio) and also the impressive saxophonist Joshua Redman\n(with his Elastic Band). But now\, for the first time\, both\ngentlemen will appear together as a duo on one and the same\nstage. These jazz musicians certainly have one thing in\ncommon\, aside from previous collaborations\, and that is\ntheir open mind. So it is that\, aside from jazz (and\nclassical)\, Brad Mehldau also often flirts with pop. Just\nremember his sublime versions of Radiohead songs like\n'Paranoid Android' and 'Exit Music (For A\nFilm)'\, Nick Drake's 'River Man' or The\nBeatles 'Dear Prudence'. In turn\, Joshua Redman has\nreworked song material from Sheryl Crow and Led Zeppelin and\nhas previously played together with the likes of Flea (Red\nHot Chili Peppers)\, ?uestlove (The Roots) and Michelle\nN’Degeocello.The Guardian certainly spoke words of praise\nabout their recent visit to London's Wigmore Hall and\nimmediately crowned them with a ****-review: "On the\nduo gig with Redman\, Mehldau was often able to let his\npartner's built-in swing release his most whimsical\nside. Characteristically audacious departures from the\nharmony inflected his first solo on the opening ‘Don't\nBe Sad’\, while Redman started to relax and lengthen his\nlines on the following rather mournful waltz. Charlie\nParker's ‘Donna Lee’ began deep in the tenor's\nregister\, and the two swapped phrases through the improv.\nRedman conjured a beautiful\, circular-breathed overture to\n‘The Folks Who Live On the Hill’\, and steadily revealed\nmore of his expressive tone-colouring all the way through to\nthe hypnotically rocking encore."Want to bet that this\nunique encounter results in fireworks?
