SUMMARY:Battles + Dan Deacon + Oneohtrix Point Never + Factory Floor
+ Ford & Lopatin (formerly known as Games)
LOCATION:AB Grote zaal (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:Battles (US)They simply couldn't be lacking at this\nfinal edition of Domino: the phenomenal Battles. In a\nsomewhat modified line up though\, as last year Battles\nannounced the amicable split with Tyondai Braxton (who\ndebuted in ’09 on Warp with his solo-album ‘Central\nMarket’). According to the band\, it was “due to\nBattles' ambitions of finishing their second studio\nalbum followed by commitments to a full touring schedule in\n‘11\, and Tyondai's own commitments as a solo artist\nand his desire not to tour”. That's been noted.\nIt's already ’07 ago since debut ‘Mirrored’ (with\nthat indestructible single ‘Atlas’) was released but we\nkept ourselves going with the song ‘The Line’ (from the\nsoundtrack of ‘Twilight Sage: Eclipse’). The new album\nis expected for release in the first half of this year.\nDrummer John Stanier about that: “One word I can use to\ndescribe the new record is ‘sexy’. As a foretaste\,\nBattles will be visiting not only Japan but also an\nexclusive number of European cities. Thanx for droppin’\nby! 6:30 pm - Ford & Lopatin (formerly known as\nGames) (US – DJ set)Games are childhood friends Daniel\nLopatin aka Oneohtrix Point Never and Joel Ford (Tiger\nCity). Their first 12-inch came out last year via Hippos In\nTank (see also: Hype Williams). Boomkat wrote of\nit:”Sounding like George Benson spooning with Toro Y Moi\non a handful of valium\, and at 33 instead of 45. From\nbehind the turntables\, Games will provide you with auditory\npleasure before\, after and in-between…Oneohtrix Point\nNever (US)Oneohtrix Point Never – or easier: OPN - is\nBrooklyn musician Daniel Lopatin's solo-project. At the\nend of '09 he ended up in The Wire's Top 3 best\nalbums of the year with his document of the times\n'Rifts’ (via noise label No Fun)\, a compilation his\nfirst three albums\, on which synthesizer experiments merge\nwith drones\, noise\, ambient and electronic krautrock. The\nWire even invented a new genre for it: ‘hypnagogic pop’\nor: “music that reaches beyond its performers'\nabilities. It refashions 80s chart pop-rock into a hazy\,\npsychedelic drone. It is listening to Beverly Hills Cop and\nhearing the music of the spheres". OPN’s latest album\n‘Returnal’ - finely designed by Stephen O’ Malley\n(Sunn O)))) - was released via Viennese electronica label\nEditions Mego and received rave reviews. This also came to\nthe ears of Antony Hegarty with whom Lopatin released an\nacoustic version of ‘Returnal’ (and a remix by labelmate\nFennesz).Dan Deacon (US)Baltimore resident Dan Deacon- a\nclassically trained composer with a masters degree in\nelectro-acoustics - is mainly known for his live\nperformances. Dan Deacon is then always set up in the middle\nof the hall\, amongst the audience. His ‘workbench’\nbrims with effects pedals and the vocoder and Casio do the\nrest. His shows are always a feast\, where he brings the\naudience to their knees in no time. His albums ‘Bromst’\n(’09) and ‘Spiderman Of The Rings’ (’07) each\nreceived a fabulous 8+ from Pitchfork. An extremely rare\noccurrence and instantly the classiest of ‘Best New\nMusic’. Pitchfork once more: “The song-and-dance man\nDeacon deserves to be a superstar\, or at least as much of a\nsuperstar as the Dean Martin of self-soldered electronics\ncan be.” Sarah Silverman is already a fan.Factory Floor\n(UK)London's ‘four-track\nnoisecore/electro/synthwave’ trio Factory Floor is hot!\nThey only allow themselves to be seen on concert billings\nthat are 100% to their taste. Thus they're extremely\nselective this spring and shall appear at the side of The\nVacinnes\, Chris Cunningham or soon at the ‘I’ll Be Your\nMirror’ event curated by Portishead. Factory Floor use\nvintage keyboards mixed with equally old synthezisers\,\ntape-echoes and furious drum sets. Think: Joy Division or\nKraftwerk on speed\, with a voice that reminds us of Nico.\nBritain's NME situate them between ‘Hidden’ by These\nNew Puritans and ‘Sisterworld’ by Liars. Throw some LCD\nSoundsystem and Health comparisons on top of that and\nyou're getting a pretty good idea. A series of 12-inches\nwas released last year\, including remixes by Stephen Morris\n(Joy Division\, New Order) and Chris Carter (Throbbing\nGristle). SOUNDTRACK BY... GAMES (uk)►►► DOMINO\nFACTS…Quite simply one of the highlights of the Domino\nlegacy: BATTLES\, who made an overwhelming impression during\ntheir first Belgian visit in ‘06. Again courtesy of Warp\n(which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year). Warp has\npretty much been Domino's house label over the past\nyears\, the number of acts arriving from this leading label\ncan't be counted on one hand. Remember AUTECHRE\n(’10)\, SQUAREPUSHER (’09)\, JAMIE LIDELL (’05\, and\nalso in ’99 with SUPER_COLLIDER!) and !!! (who\, together\nwith oOoOO\, bagged a nomination for Most Difficult to\nPronounce Act at Domino). The latter triumphed here during\nthe breakthrough of their album ‘Myth Takes’\n(’07).PIVOT (’08) – now renamed PVT – was also a\nhighlight. Their drummer doubled (and also passed by twice)\nwith jazz meets electronica project TRIOSK. Buddies HUDSON\nMOHAWKE and RUSTIE both did true justice to the concept\nfunky in ’09. They all performed prior to their respective\ndebuts (LP or EP) seeing the light of day on Warp.By the\nway\, we also the have an excellent act here with Oneohtrix\nPoint Never on the Viennese Weense Mego (now Editions\nMego)\, the label once sent Japan's TUJIKO NORIKO to the\nAB. The label is now experiencing its heyday with the likes\nof Emeralds\, Cindytalk and Bill Orcutt. \n
