SUMMARY:Baby Dee
LOCATION:AB Club - staand (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:Transsexual multi-instrumentalist has Antony Hegarty as\nfan.Baby Dee is a classically trained\nharpist/multi-instrumentalist who engages herself entirely\nin classical piano on latest album ‘Regifted Light’. The\nstory is as beautiful as it is touching. Friend and producer\nAndrew W.K. (yep\, the man from ‘Party Hard’) was the\nproud possessor of a superb Steinway D piano. But he had to\nget rid of it when moving to a smaller apartment. Its new\nabode was in Cleveland\, Ohio\, and more specifically the\nhome of Baby Dee. She threw herself upon the instrument\,\nwith ‘Regifted Light’ as a result. An album with a\nnotable classical angle that immediately received an\nimpressive 8/10 from leading mag Pitchfork. The transsexual\nBaby Dee began his/her career as street performer and chose\nresolutely for a musical career after many other meanders. A\ngood choice\, if you want our opinion\, as we don't\nparticularly want to draw up the image of her circus role at\nConey Island (NYC) as hermaphrodite. Her acquaintance with\nAntony Hegarty (Antony & the Johnsons) led to an\nencounter with David Tibet (founder of Current 93) who\nbrought out her first releases. By the way\, it was the very\nsame David Tibet who also released Antony’s first singles\non his Durtro-label.Now in the AB for a second time. \nSupport act for the Baby Dee concert will be Puzzle Muteson\nor rather Brit Terry Magson. Magson debuted just recently\nwith ‘En Garde’ on quality Icelandic label Bedroom\nCommunity. Think: Sam Amidon\, Nico Muhly and Valgeir\nSigurðsson. The latter two also arranged and produced the\nalbum. The national press is certainly raving. Extra\nsupport act – aside from the previously announced Puzzle\nMuteson – will be Canadian guitarist Doug Tielli. Tielli\nis a part of Baby Dee's band and at the end of the year\nhe'll be releasing his solo debut ‘Swan Sky Sea\nSquirrel’ (via Tin Angel Records) containing echoes of\nRobert Wyatt and Gillian Welch.Humo: “His folk songs –\nestablished around his acoustic finger picking – sometimes\napproach Joanna Newsom. Just like Newsom's work\,\n'En Garde' needs a little time before you fully\nappreciate its beauty.”RifRaf: “His whispery songs are\nborne by his delicate vibrato (falls somewhere between\nDaniel Martin Moore\, Sam Beam and Antony Hegarty) and the\nsubtle accompaniment of acoustic guitar\, piano\, strings\nand harp are best done justice in the evening twilight with\nthe surround sound at a powerful volume.” \n
