SUMMARY:Ayo
LOCATION:AB Grote zaal (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:The release of 'Down On My Knees'\, in 2006\,\nrevealed the musical gift of Joy Olasumibo Ogunmakin\,\nbetter known as Ayo. Influenced by Bob Marley as well as by\nDonny Hathaway\, this young artist coming from Nigeria\nimmediately charmed her audience with very personal\nuniverse.Her first album\, 'Joyful'\, sold more than\n400.000 copies… quite an amazing feat for these twelve\ntracks recorded in five days !The second album\,\n'Gravity At Last'\, was recorded in the Compass\nPoint studios in Nassau\, Bahamas. Just like its\npredecessor\, it was finalized in five days. Jay Newland\nco-produced it\, with among others Larry Campbell playing\nguitars and Lucky Peterson on keyboards. Ayo’s third opus\nwill be named after her first daughter\,\n'Billie-Eve'. This new release\, richer and more\ncomplex than its two predecessors\, offers collaborations\nwith prestigious guests and prioritizes profoundly moving\ncompositions.« I absolutely wanted the album to be recorded\nin New York\, and we had to choose between two studios:\nAvatar or Sear Sound. I finally chose the second one\, which\nis comfortable and full of positive energy. I wanted a\nsmall\, unite team\, in order to get back to the essential.\nI produced the songs myself\, and I chose to collaborate\nwith Gail-Ann Dorsey (who plays the bass for David Bowie)\,\nCraig Ross (guitar player for Lenny Kravitz) and Flemming\nLauritsen on drums (an old school drummer\, who might sound\nclose to the Band of Gypsys). After the recordings in\nNew-York\, which lasted five days\, just like for my two\nfirst albums\, I went back to Paris to record four last\nsongs with two of the musicians that accompanied me on tour.\nAmong those songs were « It Hurts » and « Real Love »\,\non which -M- played the guitar.”This powerful album offers\nmusical tones going from reggae to psychedelic rock\, with\nsome touches of blues and deep soul\, and is perfectly\ncompleted by the moving\, personal lyrics\, probably the\nmost intense that Ayo has ever written. « This third CD is\nmore direct\, rougher\, simpler. There is this rock feeling\nall along because of the electric guitars; contrary to my\ntwo first albums\, I played very little acoustic guitar. I\nknow that it is often said that the first disc is the more\nimportant\, but for me\, it would be this one. Billie-Eve\nopened news doors\, I produced it myself and I am very proud\nof it. Far from the current trends\, from showbiz featuring\nor from any star attitude\, Ayo imposes her very personality\nas universal artist and as a singer whose sincerity is an\nevidence from the first to the last track… \n
