SUMMARY:Autechre + Rob Hall + Russell Haswell + Didjit
LOCATION:AB Grote zaal (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:DOMINO: AUTECHRE + ROB HALL + RUSSELL HASWELL + DIDJIT +\nKING MIDAS SOUND Autechre (UK) Aside stable-mates like Aphex\nTwin\, Boards Of Canada and Squarepusher\, Autechre\nundoubtedly belongs to the absolute top of world-class\nelectronica. Also: now\, finally\, here in the AB – after\nmany desperate attempts\, spread over a number of years!\nEstablished in ’87\, Autechre is still the duo Rob Brown\nand Sean Booth. Right from their debut ‘Incunabula’\n(’93)\, they were immediately catalogued under the wave of\nIDM (Intelligent Dance Music). Not surprising: the\nground-breaking Warp compilation series ‘Artificial\nIntelligence’ was also released in that period too\, with\ndance that aimed for the head rather than the belly.\nAutechre says to be strongly influenced by electro and\nhip-hop\, techno is not unknown to them either. But their\nmusic became complexer and abstracter with every release.\nJust check out their latest albums ‘Draft 7.30’\n(‘03)\, ‘Untilted’ (’05) or ‘Quaristice’\n(’08). Most recent feat: their reworking of LFO’s\n‘What Is House?’ from the famous Warp20 box of ’09.\nTheir tenth album will be released in March 2010. True to\ntradition\, everyone is behaving superfluously secretive\nabout it\, right up until the very last minute.Finally\, a\nfew useless pieces of information… You're looking for\na scientific explanation for their name? Rob and Sean?\n“The first two letters were intentional\, the rest of the\nletters were bashed randomly on the keyboard.”. Another\ngood one: their first release appeared in ’91 via Skam\,\nunder the moniker Lego Feet. This time saver too: … in\nconversation\, you can just say Ae or æ. Rob Hall\n(UK)Autechre's regular tour DJ. Is also a member of the\nsemi-permanent Gescom collective - of which nobody is 100%\ncertain who is behind the project (even though Autechre is\nthe permanent pivot). Is related to the high-quality\nelectronica label Skam (see: Bola\, Team Doyobi and the very\nfirst releases by Autechre and Boards Of Canada) and lets\nloose free\, downloadable ‘mix-tapes’\, monthly\, via\nhis site www.rob-hall.co.uk . On it\, he ‘swings’\ncheerfully from Cursor Miner\, Oscar Mulero past Bam Bam\,\nChristian Wunsch and Black Smith Craft to Afx (hey\, we a\nname we know!). It won't cheer you up but it will bring\nyou mental enlightenment. DdijitThis evening's\nillustrious unknown. All tips as to his/her identity are\nmore than welcome! Russell Haswell (UK)One of our favourite\nextreme sound/noise fetishists. His most ‘popular’ album\n‘Satanstornade’ was released in ’02 via Warp\, a\ncollaboration with Masami Akita aka Japanese noise-master\nMerzbow. ‘Satanstornade’ is a brutal\, extremely\narresting chunk of noise that would do wonders in the\ninterrogation room of the CTU. Joke by the Warp bosses: the\nrelease received catalogue number 666. His latest releases\nappeared via Editions Mego (see too: KTL by Stephen O’\nMalley). The Wire wrote of it: "a fearsome\, skull\nshattering\, flesh shredding display of electronic\nhostility." NME: “Now you can experience the terror\nin your own home.” Another fine one: "play this to a\nSlipknot fan and watch his head fall off." He's\nworked with Aphex Twin\, Earth\, Mike Vainio (Pan Sonic) as\nwell as with his regular mate Florian Hecker. Tip: be sure\nto check out Haswell’s visual art too. King Midas Sound\n A typically recurring phenomenon: albums that appear\naround the end of the year and\, in so-doing\, disappear\nbetween the flood of other releases. King Midas Sound's\n‘Waiting For You’ is a perfect example of that.\nSurreptitiously released via the dubstep label Hyperdub at\nthe end of ’09 and only now slowly getting picked up\,\ndiscovered and found to be superb. ‘Waiting For You’\nimmediatley landed in the Top 10 of ’09 in monthly The\nWire. We read a fine description: “KMS is a melancholic\nflipside to the intensity of Martin’s Work as The Bug.”\nIndeed\, while Kevin Martin (the man behind KMS) previously\npresented industrial dubstep with his project The Bug\, here\nthe lovers rock is what gets the upper hand. Definitely with\nthe sweetly voiced vocals of Roger Robinson (who has a\nfalsetto that falls somewhere between Gregory Isaacs and\nVincent Gallo) and Hitomi from Japan\, though without ever\nlosing sight of the deep dark basses. With the\nsupport of and \n Russell Haswell
