SUMMARY:Arbeid Adelt!
LOCATION:AB Box (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:◄◄ REWINDIn ‘07\, AB enthusiastically launched a\ntimeless series: ◄◄ REWIND. Central to this series are\nBelgian musicians who perform ‘their classic’ in its\nentirety. Simply call it a milestone in their career or go a\nlittle further: a key record for Belgian pop music. Often\,\nbut not always\, we’re talking about albums that are\netched into collective memory. Just call them anchor points\nin the landscape of Belgian music. So each season a number\nof performers play their complete ‘pièce de\nrésistance’. Completely? That’s right\, in the exact\norder that they want to tell their story now or wanted to\ntell it at the time of its success. With ◄◄ REWIND AB\nalso contributes to the activation of Belgium's musical\nheritage. Those who have already passed in review:\n‘Royalty In Exile’ (The Scabs)\, ‘Gorky’ (by\nGorki)\, ‘1981-1984’ (The Neon Judgement)\, ‘The\nKids’ (The Kids) and also ‘Nooit Meer Drinken’\n(Raymond Van Het Groenewoud).During this 2010 edition it is\nthe turn of GUIDO BELCANTO with his debut and tear-jerking\nclassic ‘Op Zoek Naar Romantiek’ (from ’89) and also\nthe absurd Dutch-language ‘Jonge Helden’ (from ’83) by\nARBEID ADELT\, especially reunited for the occasion! \n◄◄ REWIND: Arbeid Adelt! plays ‘Jonge Helden’ (1983)\nAA! Is back again\, exactly 30 years after their\nconception\, for the performance of their entire debut-EP\n‘Jonge Helden’ from ’83. The link between AA! and AB\nis not insignificant either. AA! namely came into being\nfollowing a Siouxsie & The Banshees concert that took\nplace in the spring of 1981 in the AB. “Surely we can do\nthat too?” stated\, then already bespectacled\, frontman\nMarcel Vanthilt. And so it was. Their first two singles hit\nthe mark: ‘Ik sta scherp’ (in ’81\, was released on a\nlabel answering to the name ‘Wereldrekord Nummer Eén’)\nand ‘De dag dat het zonlicht niet meer scheen’ (in\n’82\, a persiflage of the song of the same by John Terra\nand that elicited the desired controversy). They followed up\nin ’83 with both their debut-EP ‘Jonge Helden’ as well\nas ‘Le Chagrin En Quatre-Vingts’. The latter contained\nabsolute classic ‘Lekker Westers’ with a typically\nBelgian stanza: “Hoe heerlijk de weemoed. Het bier\, het\nverdriet. De stroom waarin de Vlaming zijn leven vergiet.\nNiet liggen op jouw rug. Lekker Westers.” their first show\nlasted exactly 7 minutes (“because we didn't have any\nmore material”) and they often toured as support act to TC\nMatic. AA! started out as a duo but quickly became a\ntriumvirate\, with Marcel Vanthilt (aka Max Georg\nAlexander)\, Jan Vanroelen (aka David Salamon) and later Luc\nVan Acker as core members. Guitarist Willy Willy (later: The\nScabs) and Dani Klein (later: Vaya Con Dios) were also to\nbecame a part of AA! The band got together again in 1991 and\nreleased two albums: ‘Des duivels oorkussen’ (containing\nsingles like ‘Spannend" and ‘Johnniie\nSexpistool’) and also ‘Noblesse Oblige’ (’94).\nAnother important auditive act in between: ‘Disco Death’\n(their '87 12”) which was an excellent adaptation of\n‘Death Disco’ by Public Image Ltd (that could even be\nheard on ‘As Heard On Radio Soulwax pt. 2.’ by 2 Many\nDj’s) ‘Jonge Helden’ was released in 1983 and produced\nby Jean-Marie Aerts. On the cover: the three members\nin/around an art nouveau-style bath. The promo slogan was\nalso “Their first fresh-armpitted mini-LP.” Noteworthy\ntrivia: that bathroom is still in existence and is housed in\nVilla Gaverzicht in Waregem. On National Heritage Day\, the\nhouse recently became protected\, in part\, due to its use\non the ‘Jonge Helden’ cover. It has hereby become just\nabout the only officially protected bathroom in Flanders.\nWhat was remarkable thing about AA! was the use of\n‘unheard Dutch’\, as Jan Delvaux (author of ‘Big In\nBelgium’) described it. “Balancing on the edge of\nanarchistic absurdism and the ridiculous\, between musical\nexperiment and the mad-house”\, we also read somewhere.\nJust try to sing along to it yourself:“De autoriteiten in\nde rapen scheiten. Superbenzine & zwembadchloride. De\nbeleidsfout: ze laat mij koud. Caesium & plutonium.”\n(From: ‘Ik sta scherp’) or “Dat is het meisje van mijn\nhart. Ze heeft ook nieren. Dat is het meisje van mijn hart.\nNeslesj Tjse Ho Che Hoo” (From: ‘Het meisje van mijn\nhart’). ‘Jonge Helden’ even contained a children's\nsong (‘Roodborstje’ )\, years before Kapitein Winokio\nstarted doing them. ‘Capita Selecta’ in turn quoted\npurely from the work of Roman writer Martialis. In the AB\n(where they partially recorded their first video-clip ‘Ik\nsta scherp’ and where they performed several of times\,\nincluding as support act to The Sound\, The Selecter and\nTC.Matic) they will perform with the original line-up as it\nwas for ‘Jonge Helden’. Line up:Marcel Vanthilt (Max\nGeorg Alexander): vocals/keyboardsJan Vanroelen (David\nSalamon): sax/ keyboardsLuc Van Acker: guitar Afterwards\,\nas ◄◄ REWIND tradition now dictates\, ARBEID ADELT! will\nbe interrogated by Jan Delvaux (author of ‘Big In Belgium.\nHet Verhaal Van De Belgische Pop’) and Wouter Van\nDriessche. \n\nhttps://www.abconcerts.be/en/agenda/arbeid-adelt/a105J000001wgflQAA
