DESCRIPTION:& present Goffredo Plastino + Antonio Critelli and\nPaolo Napoli Tickets & info via www.mim.fgov.be \nGoffredo Plastino (Newcastle University)The happiest year of\nmy life. Alan Lomax’s Italian photographs (1954-55)July\n2\, 1954: Alan Lomax makes his first field recordings and\nphotographs in Sciacca (Sicily)\, in a tuna fishery. By the\ntime his field trip ends in January 1955 in Campania\n(Southern Italy)\, Italian ethnomusicology has changed\nirrevocably.The immediate aim of the Italian collecting trip\nwas to gather materials for the Columbia World Library of\nFolk and Primitive Music series\, then being assembled by\nLomax. When he arrived in Italy\, Lomax started a\ncollaboration with Diego Carpitella (1924-1990)\, a leading\nItalian contemporary ethnomusicologist\, that was then\nassistant at a folk music archive in Rome\, and had already\ntaken part in recording trips with anthropologist Ernesto De\nMartino. Together the two ethnomusicologists laid out a plan\nof research whose scope in fact far exceeded the\nrequirements of the Columbia anthology. Their journey would\nlast from July 1954 to January 1955\, Carpitella being with\nLomax in the field until the first week of October. The\nresearch would quickly become the most important event in\npost-World War II Italian ethnomusicology: Carpitella called\nit a “voyage of discovery”.During the whole research\ntrip Lomax photographed extensively: the photographs (more\nthan 1700) present a clear panorama of Italian folk music\nand musicians\, architecture\, landscapes\, social\nrelations\, etc. - in the years immediately preceding the\nmassive deruralization of the country. The lecture will go\nback over and explain the features of this extraordinary\nfield research in 50s Italy\, focusing in particular on the\nbeautiful black and white images taken by Lomax.Goffredo\nPlastino is Reader in Ethnomusicology at the International\nCentre for Music Studies\, Newcastle University (United\nKingdom). He has published widely on Lomax’ Italian and\nSpanish field recordings\, on folk and popular Mediterranean\nmusic\, on jazz. Antonio Critelli and Paolo Napoli - In\nConcertAntonio Critelli and Paolo Napoli are two young\nmulti-instrumentalists from Central and Northern Calabria\n(Italy’s southernmost region)\, well known for their\nbravura as well as for their researches on traditional\nmusic.During their concert at the Music Instruments Museum\,\nthey will play on several\, different musical instruments\n(some photographed by Alan Lomax during his fieldwork in\n1954-55\, some other kept at MIM)\, such as:- zampogna a\nchiave delle Serre [a chiave bagpipe from Serre area]-\nzampogna a chiave del Pollino [a chiave bagpipe from Pollino\narea]- ciaramella [shawm]- surdulina [bagpipe from Northern\nCalabria]- zampogna a moderna [a moderna bagpipe\, from\nSouthern Calabria]- organetto [diatonic accordion]- double\nflutes- Calabrian lira [pear-shaped\, three-stringed\nfiddle]- tamburello [circular frame drum]The performances\,\ncommented by Goffredo Plastino (Newcastle University)\, will\ngive to the audience an introduction to the richness of\nItalian folk music as witnessed by Alan Lomax\, testifying\nat the same time the vitality of contemporary Calabrian\ntraditional soundscape.Antonio Critelli lives in Tiriolo –\na mountain village in Central Calabria – where he also\nworks as maker of folk musical instruments.
