DESCRIPTION:AB\, De Roma and Handelsbeurs presentUnder the auspices of\nthe Alan Lomax Archive and The Association for Cultural\nEquity in New YorkA Tribute to Alan Lomax with The Golden\nGlows: A Prison Songbook and Roland plays a selection of\nLead Belly songs - The Screening of ‘The Land Where The\nBlues Began’In the fall of 2009 Ancienne Belgique\norganised a tribute to American ethno-musicologist Alan\nLomax. One of the concert evenings consisted of 2 unique\nshows. On the one hand you had The Golden Glows\,\ncomplemented by a male choir for the occasion\, who brought\nthe Prison Songs recorded in the 1940's back to live.\nRoland presented\, solo\, an anthology of Lead Belly's\nwork\, the blues legend discovered by Alan Lomax.  This\nunique programme will now resumed three times: Thursday 3\nMarch in the AB in Brussels\, Friday 4 March in De Roma in\nAntwerp and on Saturday 5 March in the De Handelsbeurs in\nGhent. As a little something extra\, each evening will\ncommence with the screening of Alan Lomax directed\ndocumentary ‘The Land Where The Blues Began’.  The\nGolden Glows: A Prison SongbookAs part of the tribute to\nethno-musicologist Alan Lomax that was organised by the AB\nin the fall of 2009\, The Golden Glows – a trio from\nAntwerp with a love for old\, somewhat ‘forgotten’ music\n– had the privilege of working with a unique musical\nlegacy: Prison Songs.Together with a drummer and a\nsix-member male choir\, The Golden Glows presented a\nselection of Prison Songs\, recorded in 1947 by Alan Lomax\nin the oldest prison in Mississippi\, Parchman Farm. For as\nfar as we're aware\, it's the first time that this\nprecious legacy has been performed live and it is moreover a\nsuitable alibi to show another side of the band. Whereas the\nGlows usually opt for soft\, intimate vocal finery and a\nconsistently applied minimalism\, this time they went all\nout. Supported by six sturdy male voices and a phenomenal\ndrummer\, The Golden Glows created a unique performance that\nthrives on raw energy and vocal power. This one-off tribute\nconcert was proclaimed 3rd Best Concert of 2009 by AB.As of\n2011\, this project will be resumed as A Prison Songbook\,\nwith a five-member cast including guest musicians Geert\nHellings (dobro & lapsteel) and Frederik Meuleyzer\n(drums).Players: Katleen Scheir (soprano) - Nel Ponsaers\n(alto) - Bram Van Moorhem (tenor & guitar) - Geert\nHellings (dobro & lapsteel) - Frederik Meuleyzer (drums)\n Roland plays a selection of Lead Belly songsBlues legend\nLEAD BELLY was discovered by Alan Lomax and his father John\nA. Lomax. In the 30's they travelled to prisons in the\nSouth of the United States to record prison songs.\nThat's where they met Lead Belly and the rest is\nhistory. His ‘Good Night Irene’ in a version by The\nWeavers became a number 1 hit and Nirvana’s version of\n‘Where Did You Sleep Last Night (In The Pines)’ is\netched in everyone's memory too. But aside from that\,\nLead Belly played more than 500 songs in all. Who other than\nour very own blues legend ROLAND would be more suited to\npresent an exciting selection of those songs? ‘The Land\nWhere The Blues Began’ (USA\, 60’)Alan Lomax\, John\nBishop and Worth Long headed up the Mississippi Delta in\nsearch of the origins of the blues. They met charismatic\nstorytellers who take you back to the origin of this\nAfro-American genre. Ex-detainees\, railway workers and dock\nworkers sing their hearts out. Become familiar with the\nauthentic work songs\, the heartbeat of hard labour.
