DESCRIPTION:A CERTAIN RATIO"Without A Certain Ratio there would\nbe no !!!\, LCD Soundsystem or The Rapture"\n(AB)"James LCD Murphy was inspired to start (his label)\nDFA after reading an article in a UK paper about the\nresurgence of minimal disco like ESG and A Certain\nRatio". (Urb Magazine)Strange how a band can suddenly\nonce again become so omnipresent. Last year\, without a\nsound\, post-punk group A Certain Ratio (who date from\n’77) released their (at a rough guess) ninth album\,\n‘Mind Made Up’. Despite the lack of attention\, the band\nhas suddenly appeared on the stages of a number of prominent\nEuropean festivals annex halls. Think\,The Barbican in\nLondon or festivals like Primavera Sound (Barcelona) and\nMotel Mozaique. Entirely justified\, by the way\, as ACR\nsound just as relevant in ’09 as they did almost 30 years\nago. Soul Jazz Records (see also their compilations ‘New\nYork Noise’\, ‘100% Dynamite’\,…) started in 2002\nwith a series of A Certain Ratio reissues that introduced\nthe band to a completely new audience … Their band name\nhappens to be derived from the Brian Eno song ‘The True\nWheel’ (that in turn borrows from a quote from\nHitler).Their debut (produced by Martin Hannett) was\nreleased on the famous Factory Records (see also: Joy\nDivision\, New Order\,…) and their post-punk sound was\nquickly injected with funk and even disco. Uncut wrote of\nit: "No group can claim a greater role in post-punk’s\nmutation into funk". The most well-known ACR-hits were\ncertainly ‘Shack Up’ and ‘Do The Du’. Of the\noriginal line-up\, Martin Moscrop (guitar\, trumpet) and\nJeremy Kerr (bass\, vocals) still remain\, together with\nDonald Johnson (drums\, vocals)\, although is role was at\nfirst played by a drum machine. Finally\, in the category\n‘miscellaneous facts’... In ’80 ACR headed to New York\nin order to perform together with soulmates ESG\, opener at\nthe time was an unknown\, upcoming star answering to the\nname Madonna…    HUDSON MOHAWKEYoung Glasgowian Hudson\nMohawke belongs to the Scottish LuckyMe collective (see\nalso: Rustie\, Wireblock\,...) and is – according to\nXLR8ER – "a disciple of Dilla\, an avant-hip-hop\ninstrumentalist\, a leftfield beatmaker". Hud Mo (to\nhis friends) has released a number of hard-to-find EP’s in\nthe past but has suddenly become a hot producer\, at the\nforefront of the ‘the next generation beat music’\,\nafter the recent release of his impressive EP ‘Polyfolk\nDance’. When the famous Warp label signed him\, they\nimmediately shouted: "Hud Mo is one of our secret\nweapons for 2009!". His full-length debut will still be\nreleased this year\, again on Warp. We also read somewhere\nthat: "This so-called left-wing hip-hopper is averse to\nunnecessary frills and prefers to make beats with the most\nramshackle possible Nintendo game-console." Ready for a\nportion of laser bass? Or rather 'wonky'\, as they\nsay in the UK? Hudson: "I like to be un-pin-downable.\nI’ll be pretty gutted if ‘Wonky’ ends up sticking.\nI’d rather liked if it was called ‘Polyfolk’."\nCurious? Well you'd better come and check it out for\nyourself then\, before you going wonky from all this\n‘genre-dropping’!BLK JKSBlk Jks (pronounced: Black\nJacks) is already one of the hypes of spring now\, trust us!\n(Rightly) described as the African TV On The Radio\, a soon\nto be released EP on the (still prominent) Secretly Canadian\nlabel and with a series of exciting tracks on MySpace\ncan't be lying. The quartet describes itself as a fusion\nof traditional township jazz\, metal (only in the\nbackground)\, the Afrobeat of Fela Kuti\, reggae and dub.\nThey've warmed the world with only one EP (nice try\,\ndear glasshouse-effect). Brandon Curtis (The Secret\nMachines) is a great fan and got behind the mixing desk for\ntheir latest EP ‘Mystery EP’. Diplo (producer to M.I.A.\net al ) is also a huge fan. Are you familiar with DJ Mujava\nfrom his track ‘Township Funk’ (released via Warp)?\nWell\, BLK JKS does it live in quartet form. Finally\, Spin\ntalks about BLK JKS too: "BLK JKS fuse the electro-funk\nexperimentalism of TV on the Radio with the Afro-pop guitars\nof Vampire Weekend and drop in hints of jazz\, ethnic\nAfrican music\, and the prog-rock of contemporary acts like\nThe Mars Volta."RUSTIEFriends with Hudson Mohawke and\nalso a part of the hot LuckyMe collective from Glasgow. He\nalready gained attention with his EP ‘Jagz The Smack’\,\ninspired by the heroin problem in South Glasgow. Rustie\nprefers to call this hybrid mix of old-skool rave\, grime\,\nhip-hop and bleep techno: aquacrunk. Euh\, Rustie\, some\ncall it laser bass and others call it wonky. Rustie:\n"How I feel about being ‘Wonky’:\n"Wanky!". Rustie also acknowledges the influence\nof J. Dilla and calls the LuckyMe Crew his greatest\ninspiration. His name can also be found on remixed releases\nfrom Jamie Lidell and also Pivot.    DISKO DRUNKARDSDisko\nDrunkards are the bastard sons of none less than the famous\nGLIMMERS. Lets just say: the steaming live-incarnation of\nthe DJ sets of these gentlemen. Musically you can call it\nthe raw power of The White Stripes vs the urban jungle funk\nof Liquid Liquid vs the psychedelica of Funkadelic. Their\nfirst feat was a version of Olivia Newton-John’s\n‘Let’s Get Physical’ that was immediately a radio hit.\nBehind Disko Drunkards hide a number of illustrious\nfriends\, such as dEUS-drummer Stéphane Misseghers and also\nMillionaire-frontman Tim Vanhamel. Meanwhile Disko Drunkards\nhave released a full album with twelve of their own tracks\,\na treasure that will only be distributed at shows. Belgians\nand funk on the one?
