SUMMARY:10 jaar Duyster : The Low Anthem + Isbells
LOCATION:AB Grote zaal (Anspachlaan 110\, 1000 Brussel)
DESCRIPTION:An exchange-desk will be opened for some sold-out concerts\n(recognizable on the website by the exchange-desk logo). The\nidea is to bring together people looking for tickets and\npeople who have tickets left over. Do you have extra tickets\nor are you still looking for tickets\, then don't buy or\nsell them on the street\, come and check at the desk\ninstead. The Studio Brussel program DUYSTER will soon\nhave been around for 10 years. Or as the duo Eppo\nJanssen/Ayco Duyster finely phrase it: '10 years full of\nextreme melancholy and deafening sweetness. Quiet but\nrestless'. Just as for their 5 year anniversary\, AB has\nenthusiastically started arranging a fine feast. 5 yeas ago\nwe did that with a brilliant concert by Low. For this\nanniversary we're compiling a fine bill that currently\ncontains amongst aothers The Low Anthem and promising\nBelgian talent Isbells. Beards and folk … ramshackle\nrecording equipment in remote wooden huts… it's\ndelivered brilliant music over the past 2 years. Think:\nFleet Foxes\, Bon Iver\, Band Of Horses and Iron & Wine.\nThe latest whelp is American trio The Low Anthem and\nthey're busy playing themselves into the epi-centre of\nthat aforementioned music scene with their album ‘Oh My\nGod\, Charlie Darwin’. Ben Knox Miller and Jeff Prystowsky\nalready made debut album ‘What The Crow Brings’ in\n2007\, it was only later that singer/multi-instrumentalist\nJocie Adams came aboard. HUMO wrote of their new album\n‘één van de wonderlijkste plaatjes van dit jaar’.\nAlbum Of The Month and 4 stars for Uncut (‘A fine mix of\nhymnal purity and barn-storming rock’) and 4 stars again\nfrom MOJO (‘the second best cabin-in-winter indie album\never made\, Bon Iver wins the gold). After an ABClub concert\nin September\, which was sold out in no time\, they now\nreturn to your favourite concert hall at the end of\nJanuary.‘Is dit Belgisch?’ That was how De Morgen\nunderstandably began its review of Isbells untitled debut.\nThey also threw 4 stars at it in order to really put Gaëtan\nVandewoude's project on the map. Those searching for\nlinks will quickly arrive at Nick Drake\, Bon Iver and Fleet\nFoxes but – and De Morgen hit the nail on the head there\ntoo – it would seem that Vandewoude discovered this warm\nmelting pot of styles all by himself. Apparently half of\nBelgium was already hanging on Isbells' every word\nbefore the album was even released: ‘De Belgische Elliott\nSmith of Sam Beam (Iron&Wine) is waarlijk opgestaan en\ngaat harten veroveren' (Eppo Janssen of Pukkelpop and\nDuyster). ‘Een nieuwe grote Belgische belofte\, arcadische\nfolk met dromerige en bezwerende akoestische gitaren’\n(HUMO). Promising young Belgian talent which urgently\ndeserves to be discovered and threatens the crown currently\nborne by The Bony King of Nowhere. Just recently breaking\nhearts in the ABClub\, as support to Mark Eitzel\, now in\nJanuary rightly alighting our stage once more. The\nstirring music and the David Byrne indebted vocal sound of\nthe Brits from Fanfarlo immediately enchanted in the offices\nof AB and Duyster. Well\, that 'British' is with a\ngrain of salt as singer Simon Balthazar is from Gothenburg\nin Sweden. So you've already discovered a first musical\nconnection\, as Fanfarlo is undoubtedly stuff for fans of\nthat other Swede Jens Lekman. When Balthazar – together\nwith Cathy Lucas (violin\, keys\, vocals)\, Justin Finch\n(bass)\, Amos Memon (drums) and Leon Beckenham (trumpet\,\nkeys) – gets to work with their strange mix of instruments\n(singing saw\, clarinet\, cello\, mandolin\, ukulele\,\nmelodica) then our favourite handyman\, Sufjan Stevens\, is\nnever far away either. The band will rise up from the\nblogosphere where they have been adored and debut\n‘Reservoirs’ will be released (recorded in the US under\nthe watchful eye of producer Peter Katis (The National\,\nInterpol)).‘Listening to De Portables is like travelling\nwithout a compass or a map’. That's what De Morgen\nwrote of their album ‘Topless Is More’ from 2007.\nSuccessor ‘John Terra’ has just been released and again\nthere is no way of labeling it without tying yourself in\ndescriptive knots. This time the only clearly taken position\nwas the banning of digital loops and and so to completely\nconcentrate themselves upon organic songwriting. Eppo\nJanssen and Ayco Duyster are big fans and so the band\ncouldn't not be at their party. Especially for the\noccasion\, De Portables will do their thing with a Duyster\nclassic. Seek cover! To top it all off\, Lou Barlow has\nnow confirmed his appearance at the Duyster party. Barlow is\nof course known to the broader public as bass-player to\nDinosaur Jr. but in late 2009 his second solo album was\nreleased under the title ‘Goodnight Unknown’\, successor\nto the 5 year old ‘Emoh’. On ‘Goodnight Unknown’\,\nhe received musical assistance from Dale Crover (The\nMelvins) and Lisa Germano and he serves you a series of\nsuperb songs.Furthermore\, over the past 20 years Barlow was\nalso the brain behind lo-fi icons Sebadoh and Folk\nImplosion. He released his almost-solo work under the name\nSentridoh\, and he also found time in-between to record a\nsplit-album with our very own Rudy Trouvé (‘Subsonic\n6’). He really is a busy bee\, as over the last 2 years he\nhas recorded 2 new Dinosaur Jr. albums and toured the world\nintensively with them. The bill for the 10th anniversary\nof the Studio Brussel program Duyster has been completed by\nBrown Bird from America. Brown Bird presents a quite\nclassical mix of Americana\, folk and roots\, and shares a\ntour bus with The Low Anthem in January. \n \n
