One of the series in noteworthy British magazine The Wire is ‘The Primer’. In it, a journalist, musician or writer immerses themselves in the most important albums of a not-so-obvious artist, genre or trend.
In collaboration with The Wire, we're giving this series a live extension and we invite the writers to in Huis23.
In relation to the Nils Frahm and Lubomyr Melnik concert in the series Silence Is Sexy, Louise Gray will be presenting a new The Wire Primer to Huis23.
There's no more appropriate manner to introduce this concert evening (with two intriguing contemporary composers) than with a reading on the master of silence: John Cage.
John Cage’s (1912 – 1992) influence on modern music is difficult to judge and he is generally considered to one of the biggest revivers of (classical) music in the 20th century. With compositions like First Construction in Metal, Sonates and Interludes for Prepared Piano and of course 4’33”, Cage radically changed the musical concept and our awareness of music.
In her The Primer (published in The Wire # 161 from July 1997) Louise Gray sketches a fine image of the life and career of this interesting inventor/composer (as his teacher in the '30's, Arnold Schönberg, referred to him).
Louise Gray is freelance journalist from London who is specialised in music and visual arts. She has written for various British papers and magazines (NME, The Guardian, New Statesman,…), was music critic for The Times and cultural correspondent for The Independent On Sunday. At the moment she writes for The Wire, New Internationals en Museum Journal. She is also, amongst other things, curator of the annual Latitudes festival.
