Belgian jazz grafted upon the nerves of The Big Apple

HAMSTER AXIS OF THE ONE-CLICK PANTHER (b)
Experimental jazz from Antwerp, with two saxes in the lead. Excellent calling cards are their albums ‘Small Zoo’ (’11) and this year's release ‘Insatiable’ (that bears the subtitle ‘The Peter Houben Songbook’, sung by none less than Mauro Pawlowksi). This album is the result of what, aside from an album title, is also a concept: ‘Small Zoo’. In addition, Hamster Axis intentionally invited non jazz-related musicians to participate... making the result as unpredictable as it is surprising. Already passed in revue: Inne Eysermans (Amatorski), Tijs Delbeke (Sir Yes Sir) and Gregory Frateur (Dez Mona). At the Feeërieën they will be playing with plenty of their own power.

TAXIWARS (b)
‘TaxiWars klinkt te goed, te opwindend om als een tussendoortje te worden weggezet.’
(De Morgen)
Stuff. BadBadNotGood. GoGo Penguin. Portico. Jazz does what it must, thank goodness for that. Wonderful mutations about which jazz-journalist Stuart Nicholson already spoke in his (controversial) book ‘Is Jazz Dead? (Or Has It Moved To A New Address?) from ’05. Even finer example: TaxiWars. The result of a long-time dream of dEUS-frontman Tom Barman, to do ‘something’ with jazz. New York resident and saxophonist Robin Verheyen became the ideal partner in crime. The result sounds exciting and, fortunately, not just any old how. It smells like big city New York jazz, as if the instruments were plugged into the nerves of Barman himself. The spirit of MC 900 Ft Jesus and Serge Gainsbourg is never far removed.
Line up:
Tom Barman: vocals/parlando
Robin Verheyen: sax
Nicolas Thys: bass
Antoine Pierre: drums
