BRDCST is AB’s outstanding indoor spring festival spotlighting musical boundlessness.
The name is a direct reference to the retro futuristic electronica-pop of English band Broadcast that released inspiring albums like ‘Haha Sound’ and ‘Noise Made By The People’ over the past decade. Artists who feel strongly about musical innovation form the focal point for BRDCST. Our musical gut-feeling does the rest.
tak:til is the brand new instrumental sub-label of superb house-of-global-sounds Glitterbeat (see: Noura Mint Seymali, Bixiga 70, Tamikrest,... ). tak:til saw the light of day in ‘17 with the release of ‘Wood/Metal/...’ by New York duo 75 Dollar Bill. In the meantime there have been releases by Širom, Joshua Abrams and Jon Hassell. BRDCST presents the first Belgian tak:til night ever.
The music of Slovenian trio Širom – as could be heard on their album ‘I Can Be A Clay Snapper’ – can best be described as ‘folk from a parallel universe’. The magazine Songlines gave them a wildly enthusiastic *****-review and an ideal quote: ‘The combination of multiple overlapping textures is mesmeric, lying somewhere in the uncharted triangle between Hauschka’s acoustic techno, the Sun Ra’s Arkestra’s galactic wanderings and Kronos Quartet’s omnivorous chamber folk.’

Chicago resident Joshua Abrams plays what he calls ‘music that offers the possibility of slowing down.’ It’s no surprise then that the instrument that he plays – a guimbri, or three-string African lute – is often used in ‘healing and trance ceremonies’ that sometimes take up to 8 hours. Their latest album ‘Simultonality’ sounds mesmerizing, was labelled by Pitchfork as Best New Music, and described by The Guardian as a mix of ‘spiritual jazz, spiky post-rock and Terry Riley-inspired systems music’. 100% zen quality guaranteed!
SOUNDTRACK BY: JON HASSELL – ‘Dream Theory In Malaya. Fourth World Volume 2’ (1981)
Do you have an ear for highly original musical entertainment now and then? Because you can hear the ‘latest’ but also ‘oldest’ release on tak:til rustle through the speakers. ‘Dream Theory In Malaya’ is namely the re-release of Jon Hassell’s classic from’81. Hassell has worked with Björk, David Sylvian, as well as Talking Heads and Brian Eno. With the term ‘Fourth World Music’ he indicated ‘a unified primitive/futuristic sound combining features of world ethnic styles with advanced electronic techniques.’ His influence is still discernable today in the likes of Visible Cloaks or on labels like RVNG Intl. He is working with Warp for his latest release.
