The story of heavy-metal hell-raisers Twisted Sister
documentary, 2014, Andrew Horn, 135 min, ov/vo
The ‘Grand Funk of Glam’. The ‘NY Dolls of Metal’. A ‘compleet losgeslagen bende glitterbakken op een podium’. All refer to the same band and no small one either: glam-rock legend Twisted Sister.
The heyday of Dee Snider and his associates is situated mainly in the late ’70s and early ’80s. After the entire glam genre became increasingly discredited – mainly due to the licentious lifestyle of the artists and the often slightly too raucous concerts – the band called it a day in 1989. Ten years later Twisted Sister reunited to play major festivals.
In the documentary ‘We Are Twisted Fucking Sister!’ the band members – all now 60+ – talk about their glory days in the New York clubs. With striking ease, they recall how they trashed the place while dressed in hotpants, with wigs, slathered in makeup and lipstick. In times when the likes of Bowie and The Who were mainstream, Twisted Sister worked their own way to ‘cult’ success.
For some a big joke, for others the best glam-rockers ever! ‘We Are Twisted Fucking Sister’ immerses you in the most eccentric part of ‘70’s New York.
