Kenyan vocal beauty approved by Damon Albarn (Blur)
The, now 73-year-old, Kenyan singer Ogoya Nengo is not exactly a household name. Yet those who see her at work fall for her right away. So too, Damon Albarn – who signed her to his high-quality label Honest Jon’s – and also the well-filled audiences that have seen her at reputed festivals like Le Guess Who (The Netherlands) or OFF (Poland).
Ogoya Nengo’s (loosely translated as: ‘the priced one’) real name is Anastasia Oluoch. She comes from a family of singers/storytellers that was described by the locals as the ‘Dodo’ singers. They travelled the region for decades and sang for chieftains and colonial officers who were all impressed by her powerful voice.
Her musical splendour remained secret for years, until Damon Albarn released ‘Rang’ala - New Recordings From Kenya’.
