Giant Sand alumnus goes jazz!' (Uncut)
The very first jazz album was released 100 years ago: The Original Dixieland Jass Band with âLivery Stable Bluesâ. Thatâs why AB will be paying extra attention to jazz for a year. From contemporary classics to musical troublemakers who are inspired by jazz, to the latest incredibly headstrong jazz generation from local soil.
Screening :Â concert-film and intimate portrait of Howe Gelb in Huis 23 at 19h30!
WHAT?
The 'Great American Songbook' alias 'Future Standards' is the title of his latest CD on FireRecords. This is the 'Arizona surrealist' who recently called a halt to his controversial Giant Sand project (btw, see too: their Calexico connection.) After leaving the country behind them it is now 'all eyes on jazz.'
IN THE PRESS?
Uncut: 4*, Record Collector: 4*: '...this would be fairly unattractive if it was a mere genre exercise. Rather, Gelbâs melodic dexterity and wicked way with words makes for an enormously appealing album â think the Tom Waits of The Heart Of Saturday Night encouraging Cole Porter to bunk off and spend the afternoon shooting craps and gargling bourbon.'
AB TRIVIA?
Already appeared here with Giant Sand at that one edition of Crossing Border in 2001
