Frank Zappa, Hot Rats - ‘A movie for your ears’
Frank Zappa's 2nd solo album, after the split of The Mothers Of Invention, is an essential album for many Zappa fans.
Of the 6 tracks on that album, 5 are instrumental and on Willie The Pimp there is a small piece of 'vocal' by Captain Beefheart to be heard.
It was one of the first albums to make use of 16 track multi-tracking and whereby the drums were recorded in stereo.
The album, from 1969, is dedicated to the then newborn Dweezil Zappa.
This Classic Album Listening session will be introduced in Flemish by Belgium's authority on Zappa, radio-maker and journalist Zjakki Willems.
33 1/3 – Classic Album Listening Sessions
The idea behind Huis 33 1/3 is as simple as can be: music lovers gathering to listen to a 'classic' album - uninterrupted and in the most ideal circumstances possible (technical equipment, surroundings,..) - always introduced by an adept of the album in question.
With this new series we want to offer an alternative to the way the musical experience has evolved over recent years. By listening to strongly compressed MP3s, YouTube films, or to sites like Spotify through small earplugs or via laptop speakers we miss essential elements of the music, often without even realising it.
Many albums were created as an artwork in themselves and so deserve to be listened to in their entirety. A great deal of attention was paid to obtaining the best possible sound quality, the artwork, the order of the songs, the mood of the songs and the ‘story’ the artist wanted to involve the listener in. In many cases, no effort was spared to record the albums in the best studios, in order to make use of the best sounding mixing tables, microphones, pre-amps, compressors, reverbs, etc... All of this is completely destroyed in a few mouse-clicks.
During the 33 1/3 sessions we listen to an album in its entirety - without interruption and with the best possible technical means -and thus attempt to experience the album as it was originally intended to be heard when it was recorded, mastered and released.
